Chapter 4

Ethan stared at his mother after she said Hannah bruised herself.
He had heard Patricia dismiss people before.
Employees.
Neighbors.
Waitresses.
Doctors.
But never like this.
Never while his wife sat injured in front of him.
“She bruises herself?” he repeated.
Patricia folded her arms.
“Postpartum women are fragile. She panics, grabs at things, bumps into furniture.”
Hannah flinched at the word fragile.
Ethan saw it.
Courtney shifted in the living room.
She looked toward the hallway, as if calculating whether she could leave without being noticed.
Ethan looked at Hannah’s wrists again.
The bruises were not random.
They curved too clearly.
Too much like hands.
He swallowed the first version of his rage because Owen was crying against Hannah’s chest.
Rage could wait.
Safety could not.
He reached toward the baby carefully.
“Hannah, can I hold him?”
She hesitated.
Not because she did not trust Ethan.
Because she had been taught over the last four days that anyone reaching for Owen might not give him back.
Ethan lowered his voice.
“You can say no.”
Her face broke.
Not into relief.
Into disbelief that permission still existed.
Slowly, she let him support Owen while keeping one hand on the blanket.
Patricia’s mouth tightened.
That was when Ethan understood.
His mother was not worried about Hannah.
