Chapter 6

Ethan placed Owen carefully against his chest and moved closer to Hannah.
Not between her and the baby.
Beside them.
Then he turned his body toward the living room doorway, blocking Patricia and Courtney from entering the bedroom further.
His phone was already in his hand.
Patricia noticed.
“Ethan, do not embarrass this family.”
He looked at her.
“My wife is bruised. My newborn has been crying. Her phone is missing. You threatened her with custody.”
Patricia’s face hardened.
“That is not what happened.”
“Then you can explain that to professionals.”
Courtney’s eyes widened.
“Ethan, wait.”
He turned to her.
“Where is Hannah’s phone?”
Courtney said nothing.
“Courtney.”
Patricia snapped, “Do not answer him.”
That was enough.
Ethan dialed emergency services.
Patricia stepped forward.
He raised one firm hand.
“Neither of you comes near my wife or son again.”
His voice was quiet.
That made it final.
Hannah lowered her eyes toward the dark bruises around her wrists.
Then she said something that made Ethan’s control nearly break.
“Tell the doctor to photograph everything.”
Not help me.
Not make them stop.
Photograph everything.

She already knew they would deny it.
