Chapter 3

Patricia Parker had moved in the day Owen came home from the hospital.

Not officially.

She simply arrived with casseroles, folded baby clothes, and the confidence of a woman who never asked before taking over.

At first, Hannah tried to be grateful.

She was weak after delivery.

Owen nursed constantly.

Sleep came in broken pieces.

Ethan thought his mother’s help would make things easier.

Instead, Patricia corrected everything.

How Hannah held the baby.

How often she fed him.

How long she cried.

How slowly she walked.

How much water she drank.

Courtney came over the next morning and laughed from the doorway.

“You look like you got run over.”

Hannah tried to smile.

Patricia said, “Don’t be dramatic. Women have babies every day.”

By the third day, Patricia had moved Hannah’s phone to the kitchen “so she could rest.”

By the fourth, Courtney stopped bringing it when Hannah asked.

When Owen cried too long, Patricia took him away.

When Hannah tried to stand, Patricia gripped her wrists and pushed her back onto the bed.

“You’ll drop him,” Patricia said.

The bruises bloomed where her fingers had been.

Hannah counted hours until Ethan came home.

Then Courtney said, “If you tell him this wrong, we’ll say you’re unstable.”

And Hannah believed them enough to stay quiet until Ethan opened the door.
