Chapter 9

The emergency lights arrived before the responders entered the room.

Red and blue reflections moved across the white bedding, the wicker bassinet, the wall, Patricia’s floral dress, Courtney’s green dress, and Hannah’s tear-streaked face.

Hannah watched the colors as if unsure they were real.

Ethan spoke softly.

“They’re here.”

She nodded, but her hand reached instinctively toward Owen.

Ethan brought the baby closer so she could touch his blanket.

“I’m not taking him away from you.”

Her eyes filled again.

Patricia said, “This has gone far enough.”

Ethan turned.

“No. This has finally gone outside this room.”

Courtney sat down heavily on the edge of the sofa.

Patricia remained standing, but her confidence had fractured.

The footsteps in the hallway grew nearer.

No paramedics entered yet.

No examination began.

No police questioning appeared.

No hidden evidence was revealed.

But the private world Patricia had controlled was ending one sound at a time.

Hannah looked at Ethan.

“They’ll ask what happened.”

He nodded.

“Tell the truth.”

Her voice shook.

“All of it?”

He looked at her wrists.

Then at Owen.

“Yes.”
