Chapter 10 - Vanessa’s impossible choice

Vanessa made a sound Mara had never heard from her before.

Not anger.

Fear.

Pure, helpless fear.

“Let her go.”

Commander Shaw tightened his grip around Brooke’s arm. A pistol rested beneath her jaw.

Brooke’s face was pale, but she stood upright.

“Do not give her anything,” she said.

Helena smiled.

“She has grown brave despite you, Vanessa.”

Vanessa stepped forward.

Shaw raised the gun.

Mara held out one hand.

“Stop.”

Vanessa looked at her.

For years, the older Rainer sister had treated everyone as a piece on a board. Now she was the piece Helena intended to break.

“What do you want?” Mara asked.

“The primary key.”

“You already had access to Blackthorn House.”

“Access is not ownership.”

“The archive has been released.”

“The released archive is only the outer layer.”

Alexander’s eyes narrowed.

“You want the Genesis Ledger.”

Helena’s smile deepened.

Mara looked at him.

“What is that?”

“The original ownership record of every hidden Vale asset,” Alexander said. “Accounts, trusts, patents, voting agreements, intelligence contracts.”

“Worth how much?”

“Money is the smallest part.”

Helena gestured toward Mara’s smartwatch.

“The emergency clause made you the legal owner of Blackthorn House. The Genesis Ledger now recognizes your blood and your authority.”

Celia looked at the watch.

“Destroy it.”

Grant shook his head.

“The device is only an interface. Mara herself is the key.”

Helena looked pleased.

“At least one of my students learned something.”

Vanessa moved closer to Brooke.

“Take me instead.”

Brooke’s eyes filled.

“No.”

Helena laughed.

“You have spent your life offering yourself as though sacrifice erases cruelty.”

Vanessa’s face tightened.

“I did what you ordered.”

“You enjoyed what you did.”

The accusation landed because it was true.

Vanessa had not merely followed commands. She had used Helena’s protection as permission to dominate, punish, and control.

She looked at Mara.

“I overturned your wheelchair.”

“Yes.”

“I knew Grant had arranged your accident.”

Mara’s breath stopped.

Vanessa continued before courage abandoned her.

“I did not know when. I knew he had met the mechanic. I knew Helena approved a medical pressure strategy.”

“You watched me leave the house.”

“Yes.”

“And said nothing.”

“Yes.”

Brooke closed her eyes.

Vanessa’s voice broke.

“I thought if Grant succeeded, Helena would release Brooke from surveillance.”

Helena scoffed.

“I never promised that.”

“You implied it.”

“I allowed you to believe what kept you obedient.”

Vanessa stared at her mentor with dawning horror. Her entire life had been built around a bargain Helena never intended to honor.

Mara looked at Brooke.

“What happened after we entered the tunnel?”

“Shaw’s team came through the medical room. Vanessa pushed me behind the oxygen tank before the wall opened. I thought I was hidden. They were already waiting.”

“Did they hurt you?”

“No.”

Helena touched Brooke’s hair.

Vanessa’s eyes turned murderous.

“Do not touch her.”

Helena looked amused.

“You taught me that gesture.”

Mara understood. Vanessa’s violence had been modeled on Helena’s—possession disguised as protection.

The steel barrier behind Mara shook as Price’s agents tried to breach it.

Helena checked her watch.

“Federal reinforcements will reach the property in eight minutes.”

“Then you are trapped,” Nathan said.

“Only if I remain.”

She pointed toward the white door.

Beyond it, Mara heard helicopter blades in the distance.

A concealed extraction point waited in the forest.

Helena held out her hand.

“Mara comes with me. Brooke stays alive. The others may leave.”

Grant immediately stepped toward Helena.

“I’m coming.”

She did not look at him.

“No.”

His face collapsed.

“After everything I did—”

“You failed to obtain the key, failed to control your wife, exposed the basement, and attempted to shoot the primary heir. Why would I take you?”

Grant’s desperation became rage.

He lunged for Mara’s wrist.

Celia struck him from the side.

Both fell against the tunnel wall.

The smartwatch tore free and skidded across the floor.

Helena moved faster than anyone expected.

She seized it.

The screen illuminated beneath her fingers.

UNAUTHORIZED USER.

BIOLOGICAL PROXIMITY DETECTED.

Mara saw the message.

So did Alexander.

Helena was biologically related to her.

But the device did not confirm she was Mara’s mother.

Helena’s expression flickered.

Mara noticed.

“You were not certain,” Mara said.

Helena closed her hand around the watch.

“Blood is certainty.”

“No. You built this entire scheme because you did not know which daughter was yours.”

Celia looked sharply at her.

Mara continued.

“The hospital records were altered. Alexander lied. Margaret is dead. You needed both Celia and me alive until one authenticated the Genesis Ledger.”

Helena’s calm cracked.

“Alexander stole my child.”

“Which child?”

Silence.

Celia stepped closer.

“You do not know.”

Helena looked between them.

Her life’s obsession had been founded on an uncertainty she could not admit.

Mara held out her hand.

“Give back the watch and release Brooke.”

Helena pointed Shaw’s gun toward Celia.

“Either daughter can open the ledger. I only need one.”

Grant moved while everyone watched Helena.

He grabbed the fallen pistol from Price’s separated side of the barrier, reaching through a narrow opening.

He fired.

The bullet struck Shaw in the shoulder.

Brooke dropped to the floor.

Vanessa ran to her.

Price’s agents forced the steel barrier upward.

Chaos erupted.

Helena seized Celia by the hair and dragged her toward the white door.

Mara threw herself from the evacuation chair.

Pain tore through her pelvis, but she caught Helena’s coat.

Both women fell.

The smartwatch slid into the grass beyond the exit.

Alexander reached it first.

He placed his thumb against the screen.

The device flashed.

IDENTITY REJECTED.

Everyone froze.

The man beneath Blackthorn House was not Alexander Vale.

His face emptied.

Mara stared at him.

“Who are you?”

Before he could answer, Helena smiled from the ground.

May you like

“At last,” she whispered. “One lie has died.”

👉 The smartwatch rejected the man claiming to be Alexander, proving that Mara’s rescued father was an impostor—or someone even more dangerous.
