Chapter 13 - the secret in Brooke’s blood

Mara awakened to the sound of alarms.
Her vision cleared slowly.
White ceiling.
Cold light.
Pain.
A surgical bandage covered her left hip. Tubes ran into both arms.
Dr. Eleanor stood over her.
“The implant is out.”
“Brooke,” Mara whispered.
The doctor’s expression changed.
“How do you know?”
“The watch.”
Mara tried to sit up.
Eleanor stopped her.
“You lost a dangerous amount of blood.”
“Where is she?”
“Missing.”
The alarms were not medical. Security warnings flashed along the corridor.
Mara forced herself upright despite the pain.
“What happened?”
“During your surgery, the facility lost power for forty-three seconds. When emergency systems returned, Helena, Adrian, and Brooke were gone.”
“And Vanessa?”
“Injured.”
“Grant?”
“Still secured.”
“Alexander?”
Eleanor looked toward the door.
“Also missing.”
Mara stared at her.
“All of them?”
“Agent Price believes they used separate exits.”
Nathan entered, his jacket stained with blood.
“Mara.”
“Tell me.”
He approached the bed.
“Vanessa found Brooke’s room empty. Someone struck her from behind. Security footage shows Adrian escorting Brooke toward the north elevator.”
“Was she resisting?”
“No.”
Mara thought of the watch message.
“Brooke knew.”
Nathan hesitated.
“She may have.”
“Where is Vanessa?”
“Next room.”
Mara demanded a wheelchair.
Eleanor objected, but Mara was already pulling the IV pole toward her.
Minutes later, she entered Vanessa’s room.
The older woman had a bandage around her head. One eye was swollen.
“Where did Brooke go?” Mara asked.
Vanessa looked away.
“You should be resting.”
“Do not speak to me like family. Answer.”
Vanessa’s jaw tightened.
“She went to find Alexander.”
“You knew she carried something.”
“I knew she had an implant.”
Mara gripped the wheelchair arms.
“How?”
“Helena arranged a surgery when Brooke was thirteen. She said it was necessary to correct a heart defect.”
“What was implanted?”
“I did not know.”
“You never asked?”
“I was nineteen. Helena paid the doctors. She said Brooke would die without it.”
“And you believed her.”
“I needed to.”
Mara looked at Nathan.
“Why would the Genesis system identify Brooke as a host if she is not a Vale descendant?”
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“You still believe blood is the only currency in this family.”
Nathan’s eyes narrowed.
“What did Helena put inside Brooke?”
Vanessa looked at Mara.
“A duplicate key.”
The meaning became clear.
Helena had created a technological substitute for Mara’s biological access, using a child as a living vault.
“Brooke carried it for sixteen years,” Mara said.
“Yes.”
“Did Grant know?”
“No.”
“Did Brooke?”
Vanessa’s face collapsed.
“She found out three months ago.”
“Before my accident.”
“Yes.”
“What did she do?”
“She contacted Alexander.”
Mara froze.
“Which Alexander?”
“The real one.”
Nathan stepped closer.
“Brooke has known Alexander was alive for three months?”
Vanessa nodded.
“She found hidden transmissions in Helena’s surveillance system. Alexander told her Mara was in danger.”
“Then why did she keep packing my clothes tonight?”
“Because Grant was watching her. Helena was watching everyone.”
Mara remembered Brooke’s trembling hands, the glances toward the basement, the quiet warning that the prenup did not say what Vanessa claimed.
Brooke had not been helpless.
She had been waiting.
“She led us to the basement,” Mara said.
Vanessa nodded.
“Your smartwatch signal did not open the first lock by itself. Brooke activated the internal release.”
Nathan absorbed the revelation.
“She started the entire exposure.”
Mara felt both admiration and betrayal.
“What did Alexander ask her to do?”
“Transfer the duplicate key.”
“To him?”
“To a secure host.”
“Where?”
Vanessa looked toward the northern mountains.
“The original Vale research station.”
Dr. Eleanor entered with Agent Price.
Price carried the removed implant in an evidence container.
“It is empty.”
Mara looked at him.
“What?”
“The casing was damaged in your accident, but the encrypted core was removed before surgery.”
“By whom?”
Eleanor shook her head.
“It was gone before you arrived.”
Grant’s voice came from the doorway.
“Celia took it.”
He stood between two agents, still handcuffed.
Celia followed behind them.
Her face turned white.
“That is a lie.”
Grant smiled.
“You were alone with Mara during the flight. You helped move her from the helicopter.”
“I never touched her hip.”
“You wore the crescent ring.”
Celia looked down at the ring.
Nathan took it from her and examined its edge.
A narrow seam opened under pressure.
Inside was a tiny data shard.
Celia stared.
“I didn’t know.”
Grant laughed.
“You always say that.”
Mara looked at Celia.
“Who gave you the necklace?”
“Grant.”
Mara turned to him.
“You hid the core inside Helena’s ring.”
“I moved it after the crash.”
“Why?”
“Helena ordered me to deliver it to Celia. She believed Celia was her daughter and could become the new host.”
Celia looked sick.
“You placed this against my body for six months.”
Grant smiled.
“You wanted jewelry.”
She crossed the room and slapped him.
Price restrained her.
The data shard began flashing.
A projection appeared above Nathan’s palm.
TRANSFER INCOMPLETE.
SECONDARY HOST REQUIRED.
BROOKE RAINER: ACTIVE.
MARA VALE: DEACTIVATED.
Celia Vale: PENDING.
Mara looked at Celia.
The system recognized Margaret’s biological daughter as another potential host.
A map appeared, marking a location north of the facility.
The Vale research station.
Nathan studied the distance.
“Forty minutes by helicopter.”
Price checked his radio.
“The northern aircraft was taken during the blackout.”
“By Adrian?”
“Security records show Alexander in the cockpit.”
Mara understood the chaos.
Alexander, Adrian, Helena, and Brooke were all moving toward the same destination—but possibly in separate groups, each believing the Genesis Ledger would give them control.
Vanessa pulled herself upright.
“I’m going.”
“You can barely stand,” Eleanor said.
“So can Mara.”
Mara looked at her.
“You are not coming because you love Brooke.”
Vanessa’s expression hardened.
“I do love her.”
“You are coming because if Brooke chooses a life without you, you lose the excuse that justified everything you did.”
Vanessa absorbed the words.
Then she nodded.
“Maybe both are true.”
Mara looked at the map.
The research station sat beneath a mountain where Alexander had once taken her as a child. He had told her it was an abandoned observatory.
He had lied.
Again.
“Prepare the second helicopter,” Mara said.
Eleanor stared at her.
“You just survived surgery.”
Mara tightened the blanket around her waist.
“My sister is carrying a weapon inside her body.”
Celia looked at her.
“Which sister?”
Mara met her eyes.
May you like
“Both of you.”
👉 Mara discovered that Brooke had secretly triggered the mansion’s exposure, and now three rival factions were racing to control the key hidden inside her body.
