Chapter 11 - the brother beneath the house

The man lowered the smartwatch.
“My name is Adrian.”
Mara felt the confession like another physical blow.
Grant began laughing.
“I told you.”
Adrian looked at him with contempt.
“You never knew. You guessed whenever fear required an answer.”
Price’s agents dragged Commander Shaw away from Brooke. Vanessa wrapped both arms around her sister, refusing to release her.
Helena remained on the ground beneath Mara’s grip.
“You kept Adrian imprisoned,” Mara said.
Helena looked up at her.
“I kept him contained.”
“Where is Alexander?”
“Ask his brother.”
Mara turned to Adrian.
He looked older now that the borrowed identity had fallen away.
“Alexander survived the plane crash,” he said. “Helena arranged the disappearance. I helped.”
“Why?”
“Because your father intended to dissolve the private network and surrender the evidence to the government. Helena believed the network could reshape the world. I believed Alexander had grown weak.”
“You took his place.”
“For a time.”
Adrian looked toward the mansion.
“But Helena never trusted either of us completely. She needed Alexander’s biometrics, my knowledge, and a daughter’s bloodline.”
Celia’s voice shook.
“Where is he?”
Adrian looked at Helena.
“She moved him eleven years ago.”
Helena smiled.
“Perhaps he escaped.”
“Perhaps you killed him,” Mara said.
“If Alexander were dead, the Genesis Ledger would have transferred authority to the verified heir.”
“It didn’t?”
“No.”
Mara understood.
Her father was alive.
Somewhere.
Helena twisted beneath her.
“You are injured. You cannot hold me.”
Mara tightened her grip on the black coat.
“I do not need to.”
Price handcuffed Helena.
Federal sirens sounded beyond the forest.
For the first time that night, relief moved through the group.
Then Helena began laughing.
“You believe the people coming to rescue you are federal agents.”
Price looked toward the trees.
Red and blue lights approached through the eastern road.
His radio suddenly cleared.
“Blackthorn command, this is Director Hayes. Hold position. Extraction team arriving.”
Price’s expression changed.
“What?” Mara asked.
He lowered his voice.
“Director Hayes was one of the names in the released archive.”
Adrian looked toward the lights.
“Helena’s network extends into federal command.”
Price drew his weapon again.
“We cannot trust the arriving team.”
Nathan pointed toward the service road.
“The helicopter.”
Its blades still turned beyond the white door.
Shaw’s pilot had fled when the shooting began.
Price made the decision.
“We take the aircraft.”
Helena looked amused.
“None of you knows where it is cleared to land.”
Adrian did.
“There is a Vale medical facility forty miles north.”
“Controlled by whom?” Mara asked.
“Officially, a charitable foundation. Privately, Alexander.”
Helena stopped smiling.
Mara noticed.
“That is where he is.”
Adrian did not confirm it, but his silence was enough.
They moved quickly.
Price’s agents secured Helena, Grant, and Shaw. Celia supported Mara while Nathan and Brooke carried the evacuation chair toward the helicopter.
Vanessa remained close to Brooke, but Brooke would not look at her.
Grant called to Celia.
“Do not leave me with them.”
She turned.
For two years, she had believed his whispered promises. She had imagined a future built on Mara’s removal and Grant’s devotion.
Now she looked at him as though he were a stranger.
“You killed my parents.”
“I followed Helena’s order.”
“You always have an owner.”
His face hardened.
“You are nothing without me.”
Celia touched the crescent ring on her broken necklace.
“I was nothing because of you.”
She walked away.
As the group reached the helicopter, the convoy entered the clearing.
Black-clad agents poured from armored vehicles.
Director Hayes stepped forward, silver-haired and broad-shouldered.
“Agent Price, surrender the fugitives.”
Price raised his weapon.
“Identify your authorization.”
“National security directive.”
“From which office?”
Hayes smiled.
“The one that still exists after tonight.”
Gunfire erupted.
Price’s agents returned fire while the civilians climbed aboard.
Adrian entered the cockpit.
“You can fly this?” Mara shouted.
“Alexander and I learned together.”
“That does not reassure me.”
The helicopter lifted under a storm of bullets.
Glass cracked beside Grant’s head.
Vanessa shielded Brooke.
Price fired from the open side door until the mansion vanished beneath the trees.
Blackthorn House glowed in the distance, its security lights flickering across the property.
Then flames appeared beneath the foundation.
Mara looked at Adrian.
“You said the demolition stopped.”
“It did.”
Helena sat handcuffed against the cabin wall.
“No,” she said. “Mara stopped my command. She did not stop Alexander’s.”
The mansion exploded.
A column of fire rose into the night, swallowing the house, the basement, and every physical record left inside.
Mara watched the place where her marriage, her family, and her identity had collapsed burn to the ground.
Helena leaned closer.
“Your father always preferred clean endings.”
Mara turned toward her.
“Then why is he still alive?”
Helena’s smile returned.
“Because he never intended this to end with Blackthorn.”
Adrian pointed toward the horizon.
A cluster of white buildings appeared between the mountains.
The private medical facility.
As they approached, landing lights activated automatically.
A message appeared across the cockpit screen.
WELCOME, MARA.
