Chapter 12 - the hospital in the mountains

The facility had no public road.

It sat inside a narrow valley surrounded by dense forest and steep rock walls. From the air, it resembled an elite rehabilitation center: white buildings, glass corridors, landscaped courtyards, and a circular landing pad.

No patients appeared at the windows.

No staff waited outside.

Adrian landed the helicopter.

The engines slowed.

A calm male voice came through the cockpit speakers.

“Mara, bring Helena to the east entrance.”

She recognized the voice from childhood.

Alexander.

Not Adrian’s imitation.

Not a recording she had heard through steel.

Her father.

Adrian closed his eyes.

“You always did enjoy an entrance, brother.”

The voice ignored him.

“Agent Price may retain his weapon. The others will be protected.”

Price looked at Mara.

“This could be another containment site.”

“Everything is another containment site,” she replied.

The east entrance opened.

A row of medical staff stood inside wearing white uniforms. Their faces showed no surprise at the prisoners, weapons, or blood.

A woman in her fifties stepped forward.

“I’m Dr. Eleanor Shaw.”

Commander Shaw lifted his head despite his wounded shoulder.

“My sister.”

Eleanor did not look at him.

“Bring Mrs. Vale to surgery.”

Mara resisted when the medical team approached.

“Not until I see Alexander.”

“You have internal bleeding.”

Nathan looked alarmed.

“How do you know that?”

“Her watch transmitted vital signs during the flight.”

Mara looked at the device in Adrian’s hand.

Even after Blackthorn House burned, it continued reporting her location and body.

She hated it.

She needed it.

“Five minutes,” Mara said.

“You may not have five.”

Alexander’s voice came from the corridor.

“Then bring her to me.”

An electric medical bed rolled through the doors.

A man walked beside it.

Alexander Vale was thinner than Adrian but stood upright. He wore a dark suit without a tie. His hair was white, his face lined, but there was no mistaking the authority in his posture.

The twins faced each other.

Adrian’s expression contained envy, hatred, and something like grief.

Alexander looked at Mara.

For twelve years, she had imagined this moment. Sometimes she struck him. Sometimes she embraced him. Sometimes she demanded why he had left.

In reality, she could only stare.

He stopped several feet away.

“My daughter.”

Mara’s voice was hoarse.

“Which one?”

His eyes moved briefly toward Celia.

Both women waited.

Alexander said, “Biologically, Mara is Helena’s daughter. Celia is Margaret’s.”

Celia recoiled.

Mara looked at Helena.

The older woman’s face revealed triumph.

“I told you.”

Alexander continued.

“But Helena gave birth to twins.”

The triumph vanished.

Mara felt the world shift again.

“Twins?”

“You and Celia were born the same night. Helena’s infant died before dawn.”

Celia whispered, “Then who am I?”

Alexander looked at her.

“My daughter with Margaret.”

“And Mara?”

“Helena’s child.”

Mara struggled to understand.

“You switched us?”

“No. Helena believed Celia was hers because hospital records were altered. I took Mara and raised her with Margaret to protect her. Celia was placed with adoptive parents because Helena’s people were searching for a second infant connected to me.”

Celia stared at him.

“You gave me away.”

Alexander’s face showed pain.

“I believed distance would keep you safe.”

“My parents were murdered.”

“Yes.”

“Your plan failed.”

“Yes.”

His willingness to admit failure did not lessen it.

Mara looked at Helena.

“You did not know your baby survived.”

Helena’s face had become unreadable.

“I knew Alexander stole one child.”

“You chose me because of the star symbol.”

“I chose you because you became strong.”

“That is not motherhood.”

“No,” Alexander said. “It is recruitment.”

Helena looked at him with pure hatred.

“You stole my daughter and poisoned her against me.”

“I kept her alive.”

“You taught her to reject her birthright.”

“I taught her to choose.”

Mara nearly laughed.

Every person in the valley claimed to value her choices while constructing systems that left her none.

Dr. Eleanor approached again.

“Mrs. Vale, now.”

Mara’s abdomen had become rigid with pain. She knew the doctor was right.

“Where is the Genesis Ledger?”

Alexander’s eyes moved to the smartwatch.

“Inside you.”

Mara stared at him.

“What does that mean?”

“The key is not genetic alone. When you were a child, an encrypted biometric sequence was embedded in a medical implant near your left hip.”

Her fractured pelvis suddenly felt colder than the mountain air.

“The accident damaged it,” Alexander continued. “Grant believed the collision would kill you. Helena believed it might expose the key.”

Mara looked at Grant.

He sat handcuffed between two agents, avoiding her eyes.

“You targeted my left side.”

Grant’s silence confirmed it.

Dr. Eleanor touched Mara’s shoulder.

“The implant may be causing the internal bleeding.”

“Can you remove it?”

“Yes.”

Alexander said, “If you remove it incorrectly, the Genesis Ledger may erase itself.”

Mara stared at her father.

“You brought me here to save the key.”

“I brought you here to save you.”

“Which comes first?”

He did not answer.

That was answer enough.

Mara lay back on the medical bed.

“Remove it.”

Alexander stepped forward.

“Mara—”

“No company, archive, network, or bloodline owns my body.”

Helena laughed softly.

“You will destroy the only power capable of protecting you.”

“Then I will survive without it.”

Dr. Eleanor pushed the bed toward surgery.

Celia walked beside Mara.

Before the doors closed, Mara took her hand.

Celia looked surprised.

“Whatever he calls us,” Mara said, “we decide what we are to each other.”

The operating room doors opened.

Dr. Eleanor’s team prepared anesthesia.

Mara looked through the glass and saw Alexander, Helena, Adrian, Grant, Vanessa, Brooke, and Nathan standing in the corridor—every person connected to the lies that had shaped her life.

The mask lowered over her face.

Just before unconsciousness, the smartwatch lit up on the tray beside her.
