Chapter 5 - the voice inside the walls

A woman’s voice came through the ceiling speakers.

“Good evening, Alexander.”

Alexander’s face hardened.

Mara listened carefully. The voice was elegant, calm, and older. It carried no urgency because the woman controlling Blackthorn House believed she had already won.

“Show yourself,” Agent Price ordered.

A soft laugh answered him.

“You entered private property without understanding what it protects.”

“We have a federal warrant.”

“Your warrant was approved by Judge Elias Mercer.”

Price looked toward one of his agents.

The woman continued.

“Judge Mercer has accepted payments from Vale Meridian subsidiaries for nine years. His authorization is compromised. Your operation is compromised. Your evidence is contaminated.”

Price’s jaw tightened.

Nathan whispered, “She is trying to create procedural doubt.”

“No,” Alexander said. “She is telling the truth.”

The servers began shutting down in sequence.

One row went dark.

Then another.

Price ordered his cyber specialist to stop the purge.

The specialist connected a portable terminal to the nearest server.

“System is refusing local access.”

Mara looked around the medical room.

“Who is she?”

Alexander did not answer.

“Dad.”

The word still felt strange.

He studied Mara as though deciding how much truth she could survive.

“Her name is Helena Thorne.”

Nathan went still.

Mara recognized the name. Helena Thorne had served as Vale Meridian’s chief legal strategist during the company’s early years. She had disappeared shortly before Alexander’s plane vanished. Newspapers claimed she had retired overseas after a nervous breakdown.

“She was your attorney,” Mara said.

“She was my partner.”

Celia folded her arms.

“What kind of partner?”

Alexander’s silence answered.

Mara closed her eyes briefly.

“How many secret families did you create?”

“Only one,” Alexander replied.

Celia laughed without humor.

“Comforting.”

Helena’s voice returned.

“You always did make confession sound like accounting, Alexander.”

The countdown reached thirty-nine minutes.

Mara looked at the tablet.

“What does Helena want?”

“Control,” Alexander said.

“Of what?”

“Everything.”

Vanessa began pulling against the restraints again.

“We should negotiate.”

“With the woman who locked us underground?” Brooke asked.

“She kept me alive.”

Everyone turned.

Vanessa swallowed.

“After my parents died, Helena paid for our home, Grant’s education, my treatment—”

“What treatment?” Brooke asked.

Vanessa looked at her younger sister.

“The kind our family did not discuss.”

Brooke’s expression softened for only a moment.

Then she remembered the surveillance feed from her bedroom.

“You repaid her by watching me.”

“I protected you.”

“You installed cameras.”

“Because Helena said you would be targeted if we refused.”

Mara saw the structure emerging.

Helena had raised Grant and Vanessa as assets, placed Grant in Mara’s path, and used their family vulnerabilities to infiltrate Vale Meridian.

“Grant married me on Helena’s orders,” Mara said.

Grant looked away.

“And Celia?”

“Helena found her first,” Vanessa admitted. “She placed Celia near the company without telling her who she was.”

Celia’s face turned gray.

“The internship.”

Grant nodded.

“You were selected because of your bloodline.”

“You made me believe I earned it.”

“You were talented.”

“You slept with me because I was useful.”

Grant’s mouth tightened.

Mara almost felt sorry for Celia.

Almost.

The speakers crackled.

“Mara,” Helena said. “Your husband is not the greatest betrayal in that room.”

Nathan shifted beside her.

Mara noticed.

“Do not listen,” he said.

Helena laughed.

“Ask Nathan who drafted the original emergency clause.”

Mara looked at her attorney.

“You told me you wrote it.”

“I supervised it.”

“Who wrote the first version?”

Nathan hesitated.

Alexander answered.

“Helena.”

Mara felt something inside her go cold.

The clause she had trusted—the clause designed to protect her assets from Grant—had been created by the same woman now using it to frame her.

Nathan stepped closer.

“I changed it. I removed every access point I found.”

“You missed one.”

“Yes.”

“Did you know Helena was alive?”

“I suspected.”

“How long?”

Nathan did not answer quickly enough.

Mara pushed away from him.

Her injured hip screamed, but anger kept her upright against the bed rail.

“How long?”

“Three years.”

Grant laughed.

“There is your loyal attorney.”

Nathan turned on him.

“I kept Mara alive.”

“By hiding the person hunting her?”

“By making Helena believe the archive was still accessible.”

Mara stared at Nathan.

“You used me as bait.”

“I created distance between you and the company. The medical leave, the board restrictions—some of that came from me.”

Mara’s breath shortened.

“You helped remove me from my own company.”

“To keep you out of Helena’s reach.”

“Then my brakes failed.”

“I did not know Grant had moved that quickly.”

Grant looked insulted.

“Vanessa arranged the mechanic.”

Vanessa snapped, “On Helena’s instruction.”

“Everyone obeyed Helena,” Brooke said. “Was anyone responsible for anything?”

Silence answered her.

The electronic voice announced another external command.

OXYGEN SUPPLY: MEDICAL SUITE TERMINATED.

Alexander’s monitor alarmed.

Mara moved toward him.

The paramedic reconnected his portable oxygen.

Price looked at the sealed doors.

“She is forcing us to choose between preserving evidence and escaping.”

“No,” Alexander said. “She wants Mara to use the primary key.”

“What does that unlock?” Mara asked.

“The central archive.”

“And why does she need me?”

“Because Hollow Crown requires a living Vale descendant to authenticate the final transfer.”

Celia looked at the tablet.

“There are two of us.”

Helena’s voice softened.

“Correct.”

A wall panel slid open.

Inside were two hand scanners.

One labeled M.

The other labeled C.

Mara and Celia looked at each other.

“Only one key will be accepted,” Helena said. “The other will be permanently erased.”

Grant moved instinctively toward Celia.

Mara noticed.

So did Celia.

Helena continued.

“Choose which daughter deserves the Vale inheritance.”

Alexander pulled himself upright.

“Do not touch either scanner.”

The countdown dropped below thirty minutes.

Then a new warning appeared.

STRUCTURAL PURGE ARMED.

Mansion demolition in 29:59.

Brooke whispered, “She’s going to bring the house down on us.”

Helena’s voice remained gentle.

“Not if my daughter comes home.”

Mara looked at Celia.

Celia looked equally horrified.

Neither knew which one Helena meant.

👉 Helena demanded that one of Alexander’s daughters surrender to her—but neither Mara nor Celia knew which woman was Helena’s true child.
