Chapter 8 - siege at Blackthorn House

The first explosion struck the front gate.

Dust shook from the basement ceiling.

Brooke screamed.

Agent Price grabbed his radio.

“All units, defensive positions. Unknown armed group approaching from the east entrance.”

Only static answered.

“The mansion is blocking communications,” the cyber specialist said.

“We severed the network,” Mara replied.

“We also severed ourselves.”

Price looked toward the control panel.

“Can you restore emergency radio without reopening external access?”

Mara examined the switches.

Her father had designed the system as a maze of mutually destructive choices. Every defense carried a price.

Alexander was brought into the red room on a portable medical chair, his oxygen tank secured beside him. He looked at the live feed.

“Helena’s retrieval team.”

“How many?” Price asked.

“Usually twelve.”

The camera showed more than twenty.

Alexander corrected himself.

“She is angry.”

Grant sat handcuffed near the wall, blood running from a cut above his eyebrow.

“You cannot fight her. Open the archive and make a deal.”

Mara looked at him.

“You tried to shoot me six minutes ago.”

“I was protecting all of us.”

“You were protecting the fortune you believed you deserved.”

Vanessa entered under guard.

“He will sell every person in this room if Helena promises him a chair at the table.”

Grant smiled coldly.

“So will you.”

Vanessa did not deny it.

The archive countdown continued.

08:44.

Nathan studied the release map.

“When it reaches zero, where do the files go?”

“Everywhere,” Alexander said. “News organizations, regulatory agencies, courts, rival companies, private servers.”

“Then Helena cannot stop it from outside,” Price said.

“She can destroy the physical source.”

Another explosion shook the mansion.

The camera feed showed the gate collapsing.

Black vehicles rolled onto the property.

Mara’s smartwatch vibrated.

A message appeared from the house security system.

RESIDENT DEFENSE AUTHORIZATION REQUIRED.

Three options followed:

LOCKDOWN

EVACUATION

SCORCHED FOUNDATION

Mara stared at the final phrase.

“What is scorched foundation?”

Alexander answered without looking at her.

“An underground incendiary system.”

Brooke whispered, “You built the house to burn itself?”

“To prevent capture of the central archive.”

Mara’s anger sharpened.

“You created every nightmare we are facing.”

“Yes.”

The simplicity of his answer silenced her.

Alexander met her eyes.

“I believed control could prevent chaos. Helena believed fear could prevent betrayal. Grant believed possession could replace ability. Vanessa believed cruelty could protect love. We all created this.”

“And I am supposed to fix it.”

“No. You are supposed to decide what survives.”

The archive reached six minutes.

Gunfire erupted upstairs.

Price’s agents moved into the corridor.

Mara selected LOCKDOWN.

Steel shutters divided the basement into compartments. The operatives above began cutting through the foyer doors.

The cyber specialist opened a limited emergency channel.

A single transmission escaped before jamming resumed.

“Federal team under attack at Blackthorn House. Request immediate tactical support.”

“How long until they arrive?” Nathan asked.

Price listened to the static.

“Unknown.”

Celia had remained near the doorway, clutching her broken necklace.

She approached Mara.

“The ring Grant gave me opened Alexander’s room. Why?”

Alexander answered.

“Because the ring belonged to Helena.”

Celia looked at it.

“So she intended me to reach you.”

“She intended you to replace Mara if necessary.”

Celia flinched.

Mara watched her.

“Why did you come here tonight?”

“Grant said you would sign the divorce, and we would leave together.”

“You believed him?”

“I wanted to.”

Celia lowered her voice.

“I found something in his apartment last week. A folder with photographs of my adoptive parents. A report on their deaths.”

Mara’s attention sharpened.

“How did they die?”

“Carbon monoxide leak.”

Alexander closed his eyes.

Celia continued.

“The report said the leak was staged.”

Grant shifted against his restraints.

“You are confused.”

Celia stepped toward him.

“Did Helena kill them?”

Grant remained silent.

“Did you?”

His eyes revealed the answer before his mouth did.

“I did what was necessary to bring you into the program.”

Celia struck him across the face.

Grant laughed.

“You slept beside me for two years and never knew.”

She struck him again.

Price pulled her back.

The archive countdown reached three minutes.

Upstairs, another barrier collapsed.

A voice came through the mansion speakers—not Helena’s.

A man.

“Primary heir, this is Commander Shaw. Surrender the archive and no one else dies.”

Price looked at Alexander.

“Do you know him?”

“Helena’s field commander. Former special operations.”

Shaw continued.

“Place Mara Vale at the front entrance with the primary key.”

Grant looked at Mara’s watch.

“That is what they want.”

Mara understood the watch itself was now part of the authentication chain.

Brooke moved closer to her.

“They cannot have you.”

Vanessa stared at her younger sister.

Something changed in her face.

For once, she did not issue an order. She asked a question.

“Brooke, do you trust me?”

“No.”

Vanessa nodded as though she deserved the answer.

“Good. Then trust this: there is another exit.”

Alexander looked at her sharply.

“You found it?”

“Years ago.”

“Why did you never use it?”

“Because Helena kept Brooke under surveillance.”

Brooke’s eyes filled with anger.

“Stop making me the reason.”

Vanessa looked at her.

“You are not the reason. You are the one thing I did not regret.”

The archive countdown reached sixty seconds.

Vanessa pointed toward the original medical suite.

“Behind the oxygen wall is a service tunnel leading beyond the east forest.”

Price issued orders.

Agents began moving civilians toward the tunnel.

Mara looked at the screen.

“If we evacuate, Helena takes the house.”

“The archive will release before she reaches this room,” Nathan said.

“Unless she destroys it.”

Thirty seconds.

Grant began struggling against his restraints.

“You do not understand what those files contain. Thousands of innocent people will be destroyed.”

Alexander looked at him.

“You mean thousands of accomplices.”

Ten seconds.

Mara watched the operatives advance through the mansion.

Five.

Four.

Three.

Two.

One.

The lights went black.

For several seconds, nothing happened.

Then phones, tablets, and monitors throughout the basement illuminated simultaneously.

ARCHIVE RELEASE COMPLETE.

Grant stopped struggling.

Vanessa whispered, “It’s over.”

Alexander shook his head.

“No.”

A new file appeared on Mara’s smartwatch.

It contained a live video recorded inside a private office.

Helena Thorne sat behind a desk, speaking to someone outside the camera frame.

Mara increased the volume.

Helena said, “Once the archive is released, the world will believe Alexander built the network alone.”

A man replied.

“And Mara?”

Helena smiled.

“She will lead us directly to the final key.”

The man stepped into view.

Nathan staggered backward.

Mara stared at the screen.

May you like

The man beside Helena had the same face as Alexander Vale.

👉 The released archive revealed a second man identical to Mara’s father, suggesting the prisoner beneath Blackthorn House might not be Alexander at all.
