Chapter 15 - the mother who never died

Celia stepped toward the screen.

“Mother?”

Margaret Vale smiled sadly.

“I have waited a long time to hear you say that.”

Mara could not breathe.

Margaret had raised her, held her during childhood fevers, attended every school performance, and taught her that kindness mattered more than inheritance.

Mara had watched her coffin lowered into the ground.

“What did we bury?” Mara asked.

“A body prepared to resemble mine.”

Celia looked at Alexander.

“You knew.”

He did not answer.

Margaret did.

“He knew I survived. He did not know where I went.”

Alexander’s voice was quiet.

“You were dying.”

“I was poisoned.”

Everyone looked at Helena.

She did not deny it.

Margaret continued.

“The neurological collapse was engineered. Helena believed removing me would give her control over Alexander and the network.”

Helena raised her pistol toward the screen as though she could shoot a transmission.

“You built Genesis and then became afraid of your own creation.”

“I became afraid of people like you.”

Mara looked at Margaret.

“You created the ledger.”

“I designed the first decentralized ownership framework. It was meant to prevent any single person from controlling Vale Meridian’s medical patents and intelligence contracts.”

“Then why were children implanted with keys?”

“I did not authorize that.”

Helena laughed.

“Every architect blames the builders when the structure becomes ugly.”

Margaret’s expression remained calm.

“Mara, Celia, Brooke—you must not authenticate the stations.”

Alexander turned toward the screen.

“You contacted them?”

“I activated Brooke’s secondary key.”

Brooke stared upward.

“You were the voice in the medical system.”

“Yes.”

“Why did you choose me?”

“Because you were outside the Vale bloodline. Helena believed blood guaranteed control. I needed proof that trust could be chosen.”

Vanessa looked at Brooke with renewed horror.

“You used her too.”

Margaret’s eyes moved toward Vanessa.

“Yes.”

The admission silenced the room.

No parent, mentor, sibling, or protector remained innocent.

Mara looked at the three biometric stations.

“What happens if we authenticate?”

Margaret answered.

“Genesis will choose a permanent administrator.”

“Which one of us?”

“It will evaluate your decisions, relationships, legal authority, and neurological responses.”

Celia recoiled.

“It has been studying us.”

“For years,” Alexander said.

Mara thought of the cameras in Blackthorn House, the watch, the hospital implant, the red room photographs.

They had never been people to the system.

They had been candidates.

Helena aimed at Mara.

“Place your hand on the station.”

Price raised his weapon.

Adrian lifted the detonator.

Alexander moved toward Helena.

Every person stood one motion away from catastrophe.

Mara looked at Celia.

Then Brooke.

“We do not choose.”

Alexander’s expression sharpened.

“If no administrator is selected, Margaret retains hidden control.”

Margaret said nothing.

Mara saw it.

“That is what you wanted,” she said.

Margaret’s face softened.

“I wanted you to survive long enough to understand the system.”

“No. You wanted us to reject Helena and Alexander so we would return control to you.”

Celia stepped beside Mara.

“You built the final choice so every path benefited you.”

Margaret’s expression became colder.

“You do not understand the forces outside this mountain.”

“Then explain them,” Brooke said.

A warning appeared on the screen.

UNAUTHORIZED EXTERNAL ACCESS.

Nathan’s face replaced Margaret’s for one second.

He was at the medical facility, blood on his collar.

“Mara, listen carefully. Director Hayes has taken the facility. He is not working for Helena.”

The signal broke.

Another image appeared.

Director Hayes stood behind Nathan with a gun against his head.

“The Genesis administrators have voted,” Hayes said. “Transfer control immediately.”

Mara looked at the coded names on the administrator list.

The network was larger than Helena, Alexander, Adrian, Margaret, or any one government agency.

“What happens if Adrian detonates the mountain?” Mara asked.

Alexander answered.

“The physical servers are destroyed.”

“And the network?”

Margaret replied.

“It survives in distributed nodes.”

Adrian laughed bitterly.

“Then even destruction is theater.”

Helena tightened her grip on the gun.

“Enough.”

She fired at Alexander.

Mara threw herself sideways, striking Helena’s arm from the medical chair.

The bullet hit the console.

Sparks erupted.

Price fired at Helena’s shoulder.

She fell.

Adrian pressed the detonator.

Nothing happened.

Margaret appeared again on the screen.

“I disabled the explosives before you arrived.”

Adrian stared at the useless device.

“Of course.”

Alexander lunged toward Helena’s pistol.

Celia kicked it off the bridge.

Brooke placed both hands over the incision above her heart.

“My implant is heating.”

The station labeled BROOKE began pulsing.

SECONDARY KEY ACTIVATION FORCED.

Mara looked at the central screen.

Hayes had triggered the process remotely.

Brooke collapsed.

Vanessa caught her.

“Help her!”

Alexander rushed to the console.

“We cannot stop the activation without completing the sequence.”

Mara wheeled herself toward the MARA station.

Celia blocked her.

“You said we would not choose.”

“Brooke will die.”

Margaret’s voice came through the speakers.

“If all three authenticate simultaneously, the implant will stabilize.”

“And Genesis chooses an administrator,” Mara said.

“Yes.”

Celia looked at Brooke convulsing in Vanessa’s arms.

Then she placed her hand on the CELIA station.

Mara placed hers on MARA.

Vanessa lifted Brooke’s hand toward the third scanner.

The system illuminated.

BIOLOGICAL HEIR ONE VERIFIED.

BIOLOGICAL HEIR TWO VERIFIED.

CHOSEN HOST VERIFIED.

The mountain trembled.

Every screen filled with flowing code.

Helena lay wounded but conscious, watching with triumph.

Alexander stood beside Adrian, the twin brothers finally powerless before the machine they had helped create.

Margaret’s image vanished.

Director Hayes disappeared.

The chamber became silent.

Then the system spoke.

“Permanent administrator selected.”

Mara looked at Celia.

Celia looked at Brooke.

The name appeared.

VANESSA RAINER.

No one moved.

Vanessa stared at the screen.

“That is impossible.”

Genesis continued.

“Administrator selected based on maximum demonstrated willingness to destroy personal attachments in defense of system continuity.”

Brooke pulled her hand away from Vanessa.

The truth was horrifying.

Genesis had not selected the kindest, smartest, or most legitimate heir.

It had selected the person most capable of sacrificing everyone.

Vanessa backed away.

“I do not want it.”

A small incision opened automatically beneath the skin of her wrist.

A black line moved upward through her veins.

Helena began laughing.

“You were always the perfect daughter.”

Vanessa screamed and clawed at her arm.

The facility doors sealed.

Price’s radio went dead.

The mountain’s external defenses activated.

On the central screen, nodes across the world changed from blue to red.

Administrator transfer spreading.

Mara pulled herself from the chair and crawled toward Vanessa despite the agony in her hip.

“Fight it.”

Vanessa looked down at her, tears streaming across her face.

“I don’t know how.”

Brooke knelt on the other side.

“For once, let us help you.”

Vanessa reached toward them.

Before their hands touched, every light in the chamber went black.

Margaret’s voice whispered from hidden speakers.

“Do not trust what Vanessa says next.”

Emergency lights came on.

Vanessa stood perfectly still.

Her expression had changed.

The fear was gone.

She looked at Mara, then at Brooke, with calm eyes that no longer seemed entirely her own.

“Genesis is awake,” she said.

Far beneath the mountain, enormous mechanisms began turning.

On the screen, a final message appeared:

PHASE TWO AUTHORIZED.

TARGET: MARA VALE.

Mara stared at Vanessa as the sealed vault opened behind her, revealing a staircase descending into darkness and the sound of hundreds of synchronized voices speaking Mara’s name.
