Chapter 15 - Shane
Derek’s partner knew about the loan.
He did not know the cabin was obtained by forged deed.
At least investigators found no evidence he did.
Derek told Shane:
“My father-in-law moved the lake place into an LLC so I can leverage it.”
Shane asked:
“Tom’s okay with that?”
Derek:
“He wants Emily secured.”
Shane believed him.
Why?
Because I had loaned Derek money before.
Because family wealth existed.
Because people see an entitled man receive help repeatedly and eventually assume any new help is plausible.
Shane did make one mistake.
He never asked for direct proof of my consent before allowing the $112,000 transfer into company operations.
Legally, he was not required to call me simply because collateral came from family property.
But as a partner, he ignored a red flag.
He later cooperated.
Paid back funds where appropriate through business liquidation.
No forgery charge.
No secret co-conspirator.
