Chapter 24 - Derek’s letter

Derek wrote to me eighteen months after the driveway.
I did not open it for two weeks.
Then did.
Tom, I told myself the cabin was going to Emily anyway.
There.
I told myself Elaine wanted family there.
Yes.
I told myself you had more property than you used.
Yes.
Then:
None of those things gave me ownership.
Good.
I knew Elaine was dead when I created the deed. I used her signature because I believed a deed from both of you would draw less scrutiny than a new transfer from you alone.
That was the clearest admission I ever received.
Then:
I copied your signature from the boat affidavit. I copied Elaine’s from a medical directive. I copied the notary block because I thought recording offices only checked formatting.
I stopped.
No need for operational detail.
The authorities already had it.
He continued:
I thought I could keep the business alive, repay the private loan, then explain everything after nobody lost money.
Classic.
Temporary fraud.
Future honesty.
Then:
When the business kept failing, I gave the cabin to my parents because they had already sold their townhouse and because I thought their presence would make you compromise rather than undo the deed.
There.
The part I had suspected.
Then:
That was using them too.
Yes.
Finally:
I am sorry I used Elaine’s name. I know that hurt you differently from the property itself.
It did.
I wrote back one sentence.
May you like
Your apology is more accurate than your excuses were.
Nothing else.
