Emily divorced Derek.
The process took over a year.
Children.
House.
Debt.
Business interests.
The fraudulent loan money that entered their joint account complicated tracing but did not transform Emily into a criminal.
Her attorney documented where funds went.
She cooperated.
The court handled marital property separately from Derek’s criminal restitution.
Their children had structured contact with Derek through the correctional and family systems.
Emily did not tell Sophie and Max:
Daddy stole Grandpa’s cabin.
Not at eight and five.
She said:
“Dad made serious decisions that were against the law, and adults are handling them.”
Later, more.
Age matters.
Derek wrote the children letters.
Mostly good.
One line I liked:
You did not cause any of the choices I made because I was worried about money.
Important.
Children absorb adult motives easily.
Emily eventually sold their house.
Moved into a smaller rental.
She refused money from me for six months.
Pride.
Then I said:
“Do not turn my help into control and do not turn refusing help into a moral achievement.”
She laughed.
Then accepted a documented short-term loan for legal expenses.
Signed a note.
Like Derek once had.
Difference:
She made the first payment early.
