Chapter 18 - The main truth

The main truth emerged through records, not the pool alone.

Warren Pike’s business was failing.

He hid the extent of the problem from Laura.

He opened or maintained multiple credit obligations using her identity or purported authorization.

Some contained falsified documents.

Some benefited their household indirectly.

Most funded the business.

Warren believed survival of Pike Renovation justified taking temporary control of financial decisions Laura would reject.

When Laura discovered the debt, she contacted an attorney and one lender.

Warren learned.

He panicked.

On Thursday, he began gathering documents and devices he thought could expose how applications had been created.

He put them in contractor bags.

He planned to destroy or remove them.

Emily saw.

Laura confronted him.

When Laura told Emily to get Mrs. Harris, Warren stopped the child.

He locked Emily in the metal enclosure to prevent her leaving and to force Laura to continue the confrontation on his terms.

Laura tried to free her.

Warren blocked her.

They shoved each other.

He shoved harder.

She hit the patio table and suffered a concussion.

Then Warren used Emily’s continued confinement as leverage.

Come with me.

Stop fighting.

I will let her out after.

He drove Laura toward his business storage unit because he wanted passwords and access to remaining digital records.

He did not intend to kill her.

Evidence did not support a murder plan.

He did not intend to abandon Emily overnight.

He expected control to last minutes.

That did not make it harmless.

His entire plan depended on one belief:

Fear would make other people easier to manage.

That was the main truth.
