Chapter 26 - The backyard three years later

Three years after the rescue, I took Emily to Judith Harris’s house.
Not the old property.
Judith had moved to a small condo.
She invited us for lemonade.
Emily was thirteen.
Taller.
No pink hoodie.
Judith still talked too much.
Professional nosiness survived retirement.
She said:
“You scared twenty years off my life.”
Emily smiled.
“You’re still old.”
I nearly choked.
Judith laughed.
“Good. She’s normal.”
We sat outside on a small patio.
No pool.
No metal enclosure.
Emily asked Judith:
“Why did you call Dad before police?”
Judith corrected:
“I called 911 first.”
“Oh.”
“Then your dad.”
“Why him?”
“Because your mom trusted him with you.”
Emily looked at me.
That was the first time the divorce felt like a success.
Laura and I had failed at marriage.
But years earlier she had still given a neighbor my number.
Because when something went wrong with our child, I was the person to call.
Not romance.

Trust.
Enough.
