Chapter 13 - THE BASEMENTDiane had made Trent a living space.

Foldout bed.
Space heater.
Canned food.
Coffee maker.
Clean towels.
A second phone charger.
This was not someone stopping by.
She had hidden him.
From Caleb.
From me.
From neighbors.
Maya found the basement door unlocked once.
She looked inside.
Saw a man asleep.
Diane caught her.
According to Maya:
“Grandma said there was nobody.”
That sentence became the psychological center of the story.
Maya had seen him.
Diane told her she had not.
Again.
Again.
Again.
By the fourth report, Maya had begun asking me:
“Can eyes lie?”
I had answered:
“Sometimes we misunderstand what we see.”
May you like
Correct.
But not what she needed.
