Maya came downstairs after bedtime.
Saw Trent moving toward the basement.

“I’m telling Mom.”
Diane panicked.
Trent said:
“I’m leaving.”
He went toward the back.
Maya followed.
Diane stopped her.
They argued.
Maya shouted:
“He’s real!”
Diane grabbed the curtain.
Put Maya outside.
Why?
Her explanation:
“I needed five minutes for everyone to calm down.”
Five became eleven.
Why lock the door?
“So she would stop running back inside.”
Why no coat?
“I wasn’t thinking.”
Why curtain?
“I did not want her freezing.”
That sentence was almost worse.
She knew cold mattered.
She chose a curtain rather than opening the closet beside the door and getting Maya’s coat.
