Chapter 8 - CALEB’S SECRETI asked Caleb to stay with his brother-in-law for a week.
Not because he had hurt Maya.
Because I could not look at him without hearing:

He had known Trent was back.
Caleb protested once.
Then left.
The children’s therapist later told me:
“Temporary space can be safer than performing marital unity while furious.”
I hated how reasonable that sounded.
Caleb called each night.
Maya answered.
I did not always.
Eventually he sent me an email.
Long.
No excuses.
Trent had called him fourteen days before the snowstorm.
Asked for money.
Caleb refused.
Trent said:
“Mom won’t turn me away.”
Caleb called Diane.
She promised she had not seen him.

Why did he not tell me?
His answer:
“I was ashamed.”
