Chapter 26 - THE FIRST SNOWThe first heavy snow the following winter arrived after dark.

Maya stood at the living-room window.

Eight years old now.

Proper pajamas.

Warm house.

She watched flakes gather on the porch railing.

I saw her hand move toward the whistle.

Still hanging from a hook near the door.

Caleb saw too.

He had moved home three months earlier.

Slowly.

Counseling.

Passwords were not the issue.

Truth was.

Maya said:

“Can I go outside?”

My stomach tightened.

“Now?”

“Just the porch.”

Caleb looked at me.

I looked at her.

“Boots.”

She grinned.

We put on:

Coat.

Hat.

Gloves.

Boots.

All the things she did not have that night.

She stepped onto our porch.

Snow fell.

Caleb stayed inside.

I stood in the doorway.

Maya walked to the edge.

Then turned.

“Lock me out.”

“No.”

She laughed.

“I’m kidding.”

My heart almost stopped.

“Terrible joke.”

“I know.”

Then she pulled the whistle from around her neck.

Blew once.

Sharp.

Clear.

A neighbor’s dog barked.

Maya laughed.

“Still works.”

“Yes.”

She handed it to me.

“I don’t need it every day.”

I closed my hand around the whistle.

“Okay.”

May you like

Not gone.

Just retired.
