Chapter 11 - MY MISTAKE

I stopped telling Dr. Carlson how much pressure I was under.

Why?

Because at thirty-two weeks she suggested a private social-work conversation.

I became embarrassed.

I said:

“No, Barbara is just intense.”

I minimized.

Two weeks later, I let Barbara move into our house “until the twins arrived.”

My sister Rachel begged me not to.

“She’ll take over.”

“She’s helping.”

“Melody.”

“I need sleep.”

True.

Barbara cooked.

Laundry.

Nursery.

Groceries.

She also reorganized my hospital paperwork.

Moved my keys once.

Criticized every prenatal choice.

I kept telling myself:

Two more weeks.

Then:

After the babies.

I treated the delivery as a finish line after which boundaries would become easier.

I was wrong.
