Chapter 24 - RICHARD AND ME

Our marriage ended.
Not immediately.
I tried.
That surprised everyone.
After the twins left NICU, Richard entered therapy.
We met with a counselor.
He apologized.
Not once.
Many times.
“I should have given you the keys.”
“Yes.”
“I should have told Mom to leave.”
“Yes.”
“I was scared.”
“Of what?”
“Her.”
That answer changed something.
Richard had spent forty years treating Barbara’s distress as an emergency.
If she cried, fix it.
If she became angry, calm her.
If she disapproved, adjust.
He married me and unknowingly assigned me the same job.
During labor, two emergencies existed:
My medical emergency.
Barbara’s emotional emergency.

He chose the one he had been trained to prioritize.
Understanding that did not make me trust him again.
