Chapter 4 - JUNE AND ELI

Twin A arrived at 5:02 a.m.

Girl.

June.

Four pounds, thirteen ounces.

She cried immediately.

The sound shattered me.

Twin B arrived one minute later.

Boy.

Eli.

Four pounds, six ounces.

He did not cry immediately.

I stared past the surgical drape.

“What’s happening?”

“NICU team is working.”

“Why isn’t he crying?”

Someone said:

“Give them a moment.”

Never say a moment to a mother on an operating table.

Time becomes violence.

Then:

A thin cry.

I sobbed.

Both babies needed respiratory support because they were premature.

Eli more than June.

Neither had evidence of catastrophic injury.

That morning.

That was all anyone could promise.

They went to NICU.

I went to recovery.

Richard was not there.

May you like

Barbara was not there.

Police were.
