Chapter 16 - Victor blames Claire
By month six, Victor’s defense strategy shifted.
He stopped denying confinement.
He argued Claire escalated the encounter.
Messages between siblings after leaving the warehouse showed panic.
Victor:
Why the hell did you tip her over
Claire:
You told me to make her listen
Victor:
I meant talk
Claire:
You chained the door
Victor:
For ten minutes
Claire:
Then why did you drive away
Victor:
I thought you were staying
Claire:
LIAR
That exchange became central.
They did not coordinate a perfect cover story after.
Good for truth.
Bad for them.
Claire blamed Victor for the chain.
Correct.
Victor blamed Claire for the wheelchair fall.
Correct.
Both tried to use the other’s worse act to minimize their own.
Neither worked.
Separate verbs.
Claire tipped.
Victor kicked the medicine bag.
Victor chained.
Both left.
Both knew I had limited mobility.
Both knew the warehouse was unheated.
Both believed fear might make me sign later.
That last point appeared in one of Victor’s texts:
She’ll call tomorrow when she realizes Eli can’t fix this.
No one had mentioned legal documents there.
