Chapter 5 - How Eli found me

At 9:40 p.m., Eli called.
No answer.
At 9:51.
Again.
At 10:05, he called Victor.
Victor said:
“Mom’s asleep.”
Eli asked:
“Where?”
“Home.”
Eli drove to my house.
I was not there.
The caregiver on evening rotation said Victor had taken me out around four.
He called Claire.
No answer.
Then he remembered my text.
Bridgeport warehouse.
Which warehouse?
There were three former Hart facilities.
Eli had worked summer maintenance at one when he was nineteen.
He knew which location still had the rusted loading dock Victor occasionally used for storage.
He drove there.
Saw tire tracks.
Dark building.
Chain.
Called my name.
Then cut the lock because he believed an immediate emergency existed.
Police later said his entry was reasonable under the circumstances.
Good.
I did not need a side case about my rescuer becoming a burglar.
Eli said later:
“You could have sent the address.”
“I thought you knew.”
“That sentence is why families need lawyers.”

Rachel would have liked him.
They had not met yet.
