Chapter 24 - Victor’s apology took longer
Victor resisted.
He understood finances before emotion.
His first apology explained leverage.
Stress.
Creditors.
His fear that Hart properties would collapse.
Warren’s expectations.
Everything except the chain.
Then, two years after the warehouse, he wrote:
I locked the door.
There.
I knew the rear door was difficult to use. I told myself Claire would return, but I did not verify that.
Then:
I left because I wanted you to experience what it felt like to need us.
That sentence made me cold.
Finally honest.
I believed if you spent one night frightened about money and physical dependence, you would sign the next day.
There was the plan.
Not death.
Coercion.
Then:
I did not know about the trust value. I am ashamed that part of me still thinks learning the number changes the story. It doesn’t.
That was the most important thing he ever wrote.
Because it didn’t.
If Fairfield held $1 million?
Still abuse.
If I had $10,000?
Still abuse.
