Chapter 3

The mansion had been glowing when Margaret arrived.

Warm chandeliers behind black iron doors.

Snow on the marble steps.

Two golden retrievers watching from inside.

A holiday dinner waiting somewhere beyond the foyer.

Victoria opened the door herself.

Her expression changed the moment she saw the “old woman” on the porch.

Not concern.

Disgust.

Margaret lowered her voice and leaned on the crutch.

“Excuse me. I’m sorry to bother you. I slipped near the gate. May I call someone?”

Victoria looked her up and down.

“Absolutely not.”

Margaret glanced behind her.

“It’s freezing.”

“This is private property.”

“I understand. I only need a phone.”

Victoria’s mouth curled.

“There’s a shelter somewhere for people like you.”

People like you.

Margaret felt the phrase land exactly where she expected it.

Inside the doorway, Daniel appeared.

For one brief moment, Margaret’s heart lifted.

Her son would recognize cruelty, even if he did not recognize her.

He would step forward.

He would say, Victoria, stop.

He would ask if the old woman was hurt.

Instead, he frowned with embarrassment.

“Victoria, who is that?”

“Nobody,” Victoria said. “A dirty old woman from the street.”

Nobody.

Margaret’s fingers tightened around the crutch.

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

But not outraged.

That was worse.

Victoria turned back, impatience growing.

“Move before the dogs get upset.”

Margaret held the disguise one second longer.

“I can’t walk well.”

Victoria’s eyes narrowed.

Then her heel struck the crutch.

And Margaret learned the final thing she needed to know.

Her son had married a woman who could be cruel.

May you like

But he had become a man who could watch it happen.
