Chapter 6

The security director stopped several steps behind Margaret.

Not too close.

He understood her well.

Margaret Alder did not like being crowded when she was angry.

He carried the black portfolio with both hands, calm and professional.

“Mrs. Alder,” he said.

Victoria’s face changed at the title.

Mrs. Alder.

Not old woman.

Not trespasser.

Not nobody.

Mrs. Alder.

Daniel swallowed.

“Mom, I didn’t know it was you.”

Margaret turned to him.

“That is not the defense you think it is.”

His mouth closed.

Victoria stepped forward, anger fighting panic.

“This is our home.”

Margaret looked at the mansion.

The black iron doors.

The chandelier light.

The marble steps.

The dogs waiting inside.

Then she looked back at Victoria.

“No.”

Victoria laughed once, brittle and false.

“You can’t just say no.”

“I can when the deed, trust structure, and occupancy terms say it before I do.”

The security director opened the portfolio slightly, but no documents were shown.

No readable text.

No final legal explanation.

Just a sealed envelope waiting in Margaret’s hand.

Victoria stared at it.

Daniel did too.

Margaret removed the envelope and held it out.

Victoria did not take it.

Not at first.

Her hands were suddenly less steady than her voice.

“What is that?”

May you like

Margaret answered, “The beginning of consequences.”
