Chapter 7

Victoria had built an entire identity around the mansion.

The dog brand photoshoot on the front steps.

The charity brunches in the dining room.

The holiday cards by the staircase.

The interviews where she said, “Our Greenwich home reflects our lifestyle.”

Our.

That word had done a lot of stealing.

Margaret had allowed it because Daniel asked her not to interfere.

“Victoria needs to feel secure,” he said.

Margaret now wondered how many cruel things had been excused under the name of security.

Victoria finally snatched the envelope from Margaret’s hand.

Her fingers trembled.

She did not open it.

Maybe she feared that opening it in front of witnesses would make the truth official.

Margaret said, “You have thirty days to leave my house.”

Daniel looked at her sharply.

“Mom.”

She turned.

He flinched.

Not because she raised her voice.

She had not.

Because he finally heard the ownership in her words.

My house.

Not his.

Not theirs.

Not Victoria’s.

Margaret’s.

Victoria’s breath shortened.

“You can’t evict us.”

“I did not say tonight.”

The security director remained still.

No completed eviction.

No police removal.

No physical force.

No final court ruling.

Only notice.

Only boundary.

Only the first crack in the life Victoria thought she had secured by marrying Daniel.

Victoria looked toward the mansion as if the stone itself had betrayed her.

But stone had no loyalty.

Paper did.

And Margaret’s paper had never belonged to Victoria.
