Chapter 8

Daniel descended one step.

“Mom, please. Let’s talk inside.”

Margaret looked at him.

“Inside?”

He flushed.

“The neighbors—”

“The neighbors watched your wife kick a crutch out from under an old woman.”

His jaw tightened.

“You set us up.”

“No. I tested you.”

“That’s manipulation.”

Margaret’s eyes sharpened.

“Daniel, I stood on your porch asking for help.”

He looked away.

There it was again.

The avoidance.

The same weakness that had let Victoria grow bold enough to become cruel in open daylight.

Margaret’s voice softened, and somehow that made it worse.

“I did not need you to recognize me. I needed you to recognize wrong.”

Daniel’s face crumpled slightly.

Victoria snapped, “Don’t let her guilt you. She lied to us.”

Margaret turned toward her.

“You harmed someone you believed had no power.”

Victoria lifted her chin.

“She was trespassing.”

“She was asking for a phone.”

“She looked dangerous.”

Margaret glanced at the dirty coat, the fake brace, the fallen crutch.

“Dangerous?”

Victoria’s face reddened.

The excuse sounded small once spoken aloud.

The dogs stepped forward into the doorway, calm now, tails low.

Margaret looked at them.

“At least they knew to stop barking.”

Daniel closed his eyes.
