Chapter 5

Daniel recognized his mother in pieces.
First the posture.
Then the eyes.
Then the pearl earrings.
Then the way the golden retrievers stopped barking and wagged uncertainly from the doorway.
The dogs knew her.
Of course they did.
Margaret had chosen them herself before Daniel and Victoria moved in.
She had paid for the house.
The staff.
The security system.
The landscaping.
The heated front steps Victoria had apparently failed to maintain properly.
And Daniel had let his wife call her nobody.
“Mom?” he whispered.
Margaret looked at him.
Not with anger first.
With disappointment so deep it stripped him of every excuse.
Victoria’s hand flew to her chest.
“This is ridiculous.”
Margaret removed the stained scarf, revealing the collar of the tailored black winter coat beneath the disguise.
Victoria’s eyes moved from the wig to the coat to the driveway, where the security director now approached with a black portfolio.
Her confidence began breaking apart.
“Daniel,” she said sharply, “what is happening?”
Daniel did not answer.
He was staring at his mother like a boy caught lying, not a husband standing in front of his home.
Margaret picked up the fallen crutch and held it for a moment.
Then set it upright against the step.
“I came to see the woman my son married.”
Victoria tried to recover.
“You deceived me.”
Margaret’s eyes hardened.
“No. I removed your audience.”
That silenced her.
Because it was true.
Without title, money, and reputation in front of her, Victoria had shown herself with brutal speed.

Now the real audience had arrived.
