Chapter 9

Snow continued falling over the steps.

The mansion lights glowed behind Victoria like a life she had mistaken for ownership.

The sealed envelope remained in her hand.

Unopened.

Unread.

But heavy.

The security director glanced toward Margaret.

“Would you like me to proceed with the next call?”

Victoria stiffened.

Margaret held up one hand.

“Not yet.”

That frightened Victoria more.

Not yet meant there were more steps.

More documents.

More people who could be called.

More parts of her life depending on names she had never bothered to respect.

Daniel moved closer to his wife, then stopped.

For the first time, he seemed unsure whether standing beside Victoria was loyalty or self-destruction.

Margaret saw the hesitation.

Victoria saw it too.

Her voice sharpened.

“Daniel.”

He looked at her.

Then at his mother.

Then at the steps where the crutch had fallen.

He said nothing.

Margaret almost laughed.

All his life, Daniel had used silence as shelter.

Now silence exposed him.

Victoria looked back at Margaret.

“You wouldn’t do this to your own son.”

Margaret’s expression did not change.

“I am doing this because he is my son.”

Daniel’s eyes filled with something like shame.

Not enough.

Not yet.

But something.

Margaret turned toward the open doors and the dogs.

“Security will remain tonight.”

The director nodded.

Victoria’s face went pale.

No one was removed.

No final consequence arrived.
