He moved between her and Sarah.
“Don’t.”
“I’m not working for Graham.”
“You threatened my daughter at the hospital.”
“I needed Norma to believe I was.”
“Where is Natalie?”
“Alive.”

“For now.”

“It’s saline.”
James did not believe her.
She placed it on the floor.
“I changed the route because Graham’s people control the federal destination.”
“Marcus approved it.”
“Marcus trusts the wrong deputy.”
The ambulance stopped inside a warehouse.
Elise opened the rear doors.
Margaret—no, no Margaret in this story. Carolyn waited inside with Detective Marcus Bell.
James stared.
Marcus had arranged a false diversion to identify which escort officer leaked the route.
One federal vehicle had already changed course toward Red Hollow after receiving a message that Sarah was inside it.
The mole revealed himself.
Elise had been cooperating secretly for three years.
She worked at Hawthorne to gather evidence and protect Emily when possible.
“Why leave the note telling Sarah to lie?” James asked.
“To keep Norma from ordering Natalie’s death before we reached Ward N.”
“You used fear against an injured child.”
Elise looked ashamed.
“Yes.”
No noble goal erased it.
She told James the truth about Natalie’s signature.
Natalie knowingly entered the fertility study.
But the clinic told her the procedure might prevent another miscarriage. She never agreed to twins, genetic alteration, or transfer of a child.
After giving birth, Mercer forced her to sign a confidentiality document while sedated.
When she resisted, Norma took Emily.
Natalie spent eight years collecting proof quietly.
“Why not tell James?” Chris asked.
Elise looked toward him.
“She tried.”
James remembered dismissing the second-baby fear.
After that, Natalie stopped trusting his ability to believe her.
Elise revealed the Red Hollow underground wing was not the final destination.
The matched-pair elevator opened a transport tunnel leading to an abandoned coal mine.
Graham had built a mobile laboratory inside reinforced railcars.
The children could be moved across state lines underground.
Emily and Natalie were already on the train.
Mercer was there too, alive and injured.
“He turned against Graham,” Elise said.
“Why?” James asked.
“Because Graham plans to kill both girls after collecting enough material.”
Mercer wanted the experiment.
Graham wanted the patent without living witnesses.
The rail line passed beneath a ridge twenty miles away.
A maintenance junction could stop it.
Marcus organized the interception.
Before leaving, Elise gave James Natalie’s wedding ring.
“She told me to say she never stopped trying to come home.”
James closed his hand around it.
Then Sarah touched Elise’s sleeve.
“Did Emily know you were helping?”
Elise’s face crumpled.
“No. She thinks I chose Dr. Mercer over her.”
Sarah nodded solemnly.
“Then we should tell her.”
The rail tunnel shook beneath the warehouse floor.
A train passed somewhere below them.
On Marcus’s monitor, the signal moved east instead of west.
Graham had changed direction.
Its new route ended beneath St. Matthew Regional Hospital.
The place where Sarah’s evidence, medical samples, and legal records remained.
They were not moving away from her.
