Chapter 12 - The Neighbor’s KeyCarolyn Hayes had remained with Sarah at the warehouse.

When the security feed resumed, Carolyn lay unconscious beside the chair.

She had been struck but was breathing.

Elise found a small puncture mark on her arm.

The ambulance driver had entered using Marcus’s credentials and wore a federal medical uniform.

Witnesses remembered a woman in her sixties with short gray hair.

Norma remained in custody.

Unless someone resembled her.

Carolyn regained consciousness during transport.

“She had Norma’s face.”

James listened over the phone while racing toward home.

“Are you sure?”

“She sounded different.”

Norma had a sister.

The property records showed the house across from James once belonged to Miriam Vale, Norma’s identical twin.

Public records listed Miriam as dead after a childhood illness.

No grave existed.

The pattern repeated.

Hidden siblings.

Substituted identities.

Controlled records.

Carolyn purchased Miriam’s former home through a bank auction twenty years earlier. She never knew about the tunnel.

The attacker may have lived nearby using another identity.

Marcus searched Hawthorne staff photographs.

A psychiatrist named Dr. Marian Voss appeared in files from eight years earlier.

She looked identical to Norma.

Marian had treated Natalie after childbirth and certified the second baby as a delusion.

Norma did not merely work with a corrupt doctor.

Her twin sister had acted as the doctor.

Calvin Mercer’s license covered the facility.

Marian created the psychiatric evidence.

James called Norma from the car.

“Who is Marian?”

Silence.

“Your sister took Sarah.”

Norma began crying.

“She promised she would never hurt either girl.”

“Where is she going?”

“The room under your house.”

“Why?”

“That was where the original recordings were stored.”

“What recordings?”

“The birth.”

Marian filmed Natalie’s delivery, Emily’s removal, and Mercer’s first procedures.

She kept copies as leverage over Graham and Norma.

Natalie discovered part of the archive and hid it behind the green wall.

Marian believed Sarah knew where the remaining files were.

The ambulance reached the Carter driveway before police.

Exterior cameras showed Marian carrying Sarah toward the porch.

The child was conscious but unsteady.

Marian wore Norma’s coat and hairstyle.

Sarah looked at her with terrified confusion.

“Grandma?”

“I’m the grandmother who tried to save you.”

She led Sarah through the pantry and down the hidden stairs.

James arrived as tactical officers surrounded the house.

Marcus stopped him near the porch.

“She has a gun.”

“That’s my daughter.”

“She wants the archive. We need her talking.”

The kitchen speaker activated remotely.

Marian’s voice filled the room.

“James, come down alone.”

“No.”

“If police enter, the room seals.”

Marcus confirmed the steel door had connected to a pressure sensor.

Forced entry could trigger locks and ventilation gas.

James entered the pantry without a weapon.

He descended.

Sarah sat on the hospital bed with one wrist secured.

Marian stood beside the medical cabinet holding a pistol.

She looked exactly like Norma except for a thin scar near her chin.

“You built this room,” James said.

“I built a place to document what they were doing.”

“You restrained children in it.”

“Norma corrupted the purpose.”

“You still knew.”

“Yes.”

The admission carried no comfort.

Marian demanded the green-wall archive.

James said police already possessed it.

“No. Natalie found only the letters.”

Marian pointed beneath the bed.

A metal plate contained a fingerprint reader.

Sarah’s hand opened it.

Inside was a hard drive.

Natalie had hidden the original birth footage in the room where her family tried to imprison her.

Marian connected it to a monitor.

The delivery recording appeared.

Natalie lay unconscious after surgery.

Two infants rested beneath warming lights.

Mercer examined Sarah.

Marian held Emily.

Norma stood near the door.

A fifth person entered wearing hospital scrubs.

Carolyn Hayes.

James stared.

The neighbor who called him had been present at the twins’ birth.

Marian smiled.

“You trust the woman across the street because Elise told you to.”

James looked closer.

Carolyn was younger, but unmistakable.

“What was she doing there?”

“She was the research coordinator.”

Carolyn had not accidentally purchased the house across from them.

She had been assigned to monitor Sarah’s development.

Her kindness, babysitting, emergency call, and years of neighborly attention might all belong to the project.

The footage showed Carolyn removing a blood sample from each infant.

Then she looked toward the camera.

“We keep one in the natural environment and one in controlled care.”

Sarah whispered, “Miss Carolyn?”

Marian lowered her weapon slightly.

“She chose which baby went home.”

James felt horror settle deeper than anger.

Carolyn had protected Sarah that night.

She had also helped separate her from Emily at birth.

A sound came through Marian’s earpiece.

Carolyn’s voice.

“Do not show him the rest.”

Marian looked toward the ceiling.

The supposedly unconscious neighbor had awakened and accessed the room’s communication system.

Carolyn continued:

“James, the footage is incomplete. Marian took the third infant.”

The monitor advanced.

A third warming bed appeared at the edge of the frame.

Another baby girl lay beneath a yellow blanket.

James stopped breathing.

Natalie had not delivered twins.

She had delivered triplets.

👉 Marian kidnapped Sarah to recover the birth archive, but the complete footage revealed Carolyn helped separate three newborn girls—and one daughter had never appeared in any record.
