Chapter 11 - Beneath the Emergency RoomSt. Matthew Regional Hospital had been built over an abandoned freight terminal.

Few employees knew that sealed rail tunnels remained beneath the emergency wing.

Carter Industrial Health renovated part of the foundation five years earlier.

James had managed the project.

The company told him the underground work involved flood control.

It created a hidden access route instead.

The mobile laboratory stopped beneath the hospital at 2:46 p.m.

Above it, patients, nurses, and families continued moving through bright hallways without knowing a train stood beneath them.

Marcus evacuated the lower maintenance areas under the pretense of a gas leak.

Hospital administrators resisted closing the emergency department.

One administrator had already approved fraudulent transfers.

No one knew which employees served Graham.

Sarah remained inside the warehouse under federal protection while James and Chris joined Marcus at the hospital command point.

James refused to bring her near the tunnel.

The train’s system required both twins, but Graham might have copied Sarah’s biometric data from the hospital.

Agents entered through the boiler room.

The first railcar contained computers and genetic-storage units.

The second held surgical equipment.

The third contained empty restraints.

The final car was locked.

A child’s voice came through the door.

“Dad?”

James froze.

“Emily?”

“James?” she asked.

She did not call him Dad again.

He approached carefully.

“I’m here.”

“Dr. Mercer says the door opens only if Sarah comes.”

“She isn’t coming.”

“Then Mom will die.”

Natalie’s weak voice followed.

“Don’t bring her.”

James pressed one hand against the steel.

Graham had recreated the same impossible choice.

One child’s body against another person’s life.

Marcus searched for an override.

Chris found maintenance diagrams showing an emergency release above the railcar, accessible through the hospital’s trauma-room floor.

Agents entered the treatment room and removed a panel beneath an examination table.

The release mechanism had been welded shut.

Mercer spoke through the door.

“James, listen carefully. Graham has rigged the car to flood with anesthetic gas if anyone forces entry.”

“Are you helping him?”

“No.”

“You stole my child.”

“I followed Norma’s order.”

“You raised her.”

“Yes.”

“As your daughter?”

A pause.

“Yes.”

“Then help her.”

Mercer sounded broken.

“I’m trying.”

He explained that the car held Graham’s central archive. The living twins’ paired biometrics could unlock it. Without Sarah, Graham could not remove the data safely.

He planned to transport the railcar beneath the hospital, use stored samples from Sarah’s blood draw, and simulate live authentication.

The process might work.

It could also trigger the gas.

Natalie whispered that the hospital tablet contained Sarah’s full biometric scan.

The same tablet Detective Marcus used to show the kitchen footage had been connected to the intake network.

Someone copied the data when hospital staff froze the assault recording.

The documentation that exposed the crime also created the key Graham needed.

Marcus looked toward his tablet.

It had remained in his possession.

But the hospital system copied its screen image automatically.

Graham needed only the file.

A countdown appeared on the railcar exterior.

Five minutes.

Chris traced the gas line through the train’s undercarriage. It connected to a medical oxygen bank controlled from the emergency intake desk.

Above them, Nurse Olivia Grant still worked near that counter.

Marcus called her.

“Shut down auxiliary line seven.”

Olivia checked the panel.

“There is no line seven.”

“Look beneath the cabinet.”

She found a hidden valve.

Before she could close it, a hospital security officer drew a weapon.

Olivia knocked his arm aside with her clipboard and triggered the fire alarm.

Other staff restrained him.

She closed the valve.

The railcar countdown continued, but the gas-pressure indicator dropped.

Agents forced the door.

James entered first.

Natalie lay strapped to a bed.

Emily sat beside her gripping a metal instrument.

Mercer was bleeding from the shoulder.

Graham Vale stood near the archive terminal with a pistol.

He fired toward James.

Mercer shoved the weapon aside.

The shot struck the ceiling.

Marcus’s agents entered and forced Graham behind the console.

Emily ran toward Natalie instead of James.

He understood.

Mercer raised his hands.

“I surrender.”

Then the archive terminal activated.

LIVE PAIR CONFIRMED.

Sarah was miles away.

Someone had entered her biometric data from a living source.

The warehouse protection feed showed Sarah still seated beside Carolyn.

But the camera image had frozen thirty seconds earlier.

Elise called.

Her voice came through amid alarms.

“Sarah is gone.”

The warehouse loading door stood open.

A second ambulance had taken her.

The driver used Marcus’s credentials.

Graham laughed from the floor.

“You thought I was the Executor.”

Marcus pressed him down.

“Who took her?”

Graham looked toward the terminal.

“The person who recorded the kitchen.”

James stared.

The camera administrator had been listed as Calvin Mercer.

Mercer denied changing it.

Another user had hidden beneath his account.

The system displayed the live biometric location.

Sarah was moving toward the Carter house.

Someone was bringing her back to the hidden room where the entire plan began.

👉 Natalie and Emily were rescued beneath the hospital, but Sarah vanished at the exact moment the archive recognized both twins, proving another conspirator had controlled the kitchen camera from the beginning.
