Chapter 6 - Which Girl Was in the Driveway?James returned to Sarah’s hospital room and studied her face.

The question felt monstrous.

Was the child in the bed truly Sarah?

He knew the shape of her ears, the tiny gap between her front teeth, and the pale birthmark near her right ankle.

The birthmark was there.

But identical twins could share many features.

Sarah sensed his fear.

“What’s wrong?”

“Nothing, baby.”

“You’re looking at me like Grandma does.”

James sat.

“How does Grandma look at you?”

“Like she’s trying to remember.”

The hospital completed rapid genetic comparison using Sarah’s previous pediatric blood samples.

The child in the bed was Sarah Carter.

Emily remained missing.

Yet someone had tried to create confusion.

Both girls had been dressed in identical light blue pajamas. Mercer’s home contained a second pair purchased two weeks earlier.

Frank carried one child through the tunnel.

Carolyn found another in the driveway.

The assault blood appeared on both.

Marcus reconstructed the timeline.

At 6:42 p.m., Sarah entered the kitchen already bleeding.

At 6:48, Norma and Frank took Natalie through the pantry door.

At approximately 6:55, Emily entered the underground room through the tunnel.

At 7:03, the kitchen camera went dark.

At 7:11, someone brought Sarah downstairs.

A struggle occurred.

At 7:25, Frank carried one unconscious girl to the van.

At 7:31, another child emerged from the front door and sat in the driveway.

No camera showed who placed her there.

At 7:38, Carolyn found Sarah.

Where was Emily during those seven minutes?

Sarah remembered only fragments.

“Emily said we had to trade shirts.”

“Why?”

“She said Grandma wouldn’t know which one to take.”

The twins had attempted to confuse their captors.

Sarah wore Emily’s pajamas when Carolyn found her.

Emily may have worn Sarah’s clothes when Frank carried her away.

That explained why the blood from both girls mixed.

“What happened to Emily?” James asked gently.

Sarah began shaking.

“She hit Dr. Mercer with the lamp.”

“Then?”

“Grandpa grabbed her.”

“Where did he take her?”

Sarah closed her eye.

“Mommy said follow the yellow lights.”

James looked toward Chris.

The basement tunnel contained small emergency bulbs. Most were white.

Police found a side route marked with faded yellow lights. It extended beneath three houses and ended inside an abandoned storm-drain station.

There, officers found fresh tire tracks, medical tape, and Natalie’s blue sweater.

A handwritten message appeared on the wall:

RIVER ROAD—OLD FERRY HOUSE.

Natalie had scratched it into the paint with a metal clip.

The ferry house stood near a marsh twenty miles away.

Tactical teams entered after midnight.

The building contained medical equipment, children’s clothing, and empty food containers.

No people.

One room had recently held two prisoners.

The wall carried crayon marks counting days.

Seven lines.

Had someone been confined there for a week before the assault?

Emily’s school reported she had been absent for eight days with “family illness.”

Mercer may have detained his own adopted daughter after Natalie contacted her.

Another room contained surveillance monitors linked to the Carter kitchen, driveway, hospital, and James’s hotel.

The conference trip had been watched in real time.

A folder on the desk included a photograph of James checking into the hotel.

The picture was taken by someone standing inside the lobby.

James remembered a woman near reception wearing a blue coat.

Elise had followed him.

The ferry house held one more discovery.

A hospital intake form for Natalie dated that morning.

Destination:

Hawthorne Behavioral Center, North Campus.

Patient condition:

Delusional fixation on nonexistent second child.

The center had declared Emily imaginary before taking both her and Natalie.

Marcus called the facility.

Administrators denied admitting anyone.

Then Chris found a live security monitor still connected to one hallway.

A woman in a hospital gown appeared behind locked glass.

Natalie.

She looked directly toward the camera as though she knew they were watching.

Beside her stood a little girl wearing Sarah’s red sweater.

Emily.

The screen went black.

A location code flashed briefly.

WARD N—LEVEL 4.

Hawthorne’s public building had only three levels.
