Chapter 5 - Norma’s First DaughterNorma refused to discuss the blue-coated woman until Detective Marcus Bell showed her the hospital footage.

Then her confidence cracked.

“Her name is Elise.”

James stood behind the interview-room glass.

Norma explained that she gave birth to Elise at seventeen. Her parents forced a closed adoption through a private agency connected to Hawthorne Medical.

Years later, Norma located the child but did not reveal their relationship publicly.

Elise grew up believing her birth mother had died.

Calvin Mercer knew the truth and used it to control Norma.

“Why was Elise at Sarah’s hospital?” Marcus asked.

“She works for Mercer.”

“Why?”

“Because he helped her find me.”

Norma said Elise became a nurse at Hawthorne under the name Laura Bennett. She handled private patient transfers and forged intake documents.

The blue coat belonged to her.

James entered the room despite Marcus’s warning.

“Where is Natalie?”

Norma looked at him.

“I don’t know.”

“You watched Frank drag her from the kitchen.”

“We were taking her to treatment.”

“You strapped her inside a secret room.”

“She was hysterical.”

“You built that room seven years ago.”

Norma’s lips tightened.

“It was built for safety.”

“Whose?”

“Sarah’s.”

James leaned across the table.

“You planned this when she was a baby.”

Norma’s attorney demanded the interview stop.

Marcus continued before the lawyer could end it.

“Did Natalie give birth to twins?”

Norma stared at the wall.

That was answer enough.

The second infant had been transferred through Hawthorne Medical to an adoptive family under an emergency-placement order.

Norma claimed Natalie agreed before delivery.

No signed consent existed.

“She was unstable,” Norma said. “Two children would have overwhelmed her.”

“You stole my daughter,” James whispered.

Norma looked at him with something close to resentment.

“You were gone.”

“I was with my dying father for four days.”

“She needed me.”

“So you took her baby?”

“I made a decision no one else would make.”

The phrase carried pride rather than regret.

Marcus asked where the second child went.

Norma refused.

Her attorney ended the interview.

DNA comparison of Sarah’s hospital sample and preserved newborn records confirmed a twin pregnancy. Two umbilical-cord blood profiles existed under the Carter file.

One profile belonged to Sarah.

The second had been accessed recently.

Someone searched it through a private pediatric network three weeks earlier.

Natalie.

She had found a possible match.

A girl named Emily Ward, age eight, living forty miles away.

Her adoptive parents were Dr. Calvin Mercer and his former wife.

James stared at the record.

Mercer had not merely arranged the transfer.

He raised the stolen child himself.

Marcus obtained a warrant.

Calvin Mercer’s listed home stood empty. Neighbors said a man and young girl moved out two nights earlier.

A bedroom wall displayed dozens of photographs of Sarah.

School playground.

Soccer practice.

Carolyn’s porch.

Mercer had monitored one twin while raising the other.

Inside Emily’s desk was a notebook.

Dr. Mercer says the other girl took my real family.

Page after page described lessons teaching Emily that Sarah was dangerous, spoiled, and responsible for their separation.

Mercer had created resentment between children who never met.

One drawing showed Emily standing beside Natalie’s hospital bed while Norma held a syringe.

Had the girls encountered each other already?

Sarah denied meeting Emily.

But trauma and medication could affect memory.

Chris searched the Carter home again.

Behind the green wallpaper in Sarah’s bedroom, he found a narrow compartment. Natalie’s message—look behind the green wall—had referred to it.

Inside were letters sent by Emily.

The first read:

My dad says you are my sister but you stole my name.

The second:

Your mom came to my school. She cried when she saw me.

The final letter was dated the day before the assault.

I am going to help your mom take you away from the bad people. Wait for me after dinner.

Emily had planned to come to the house.

The blood on Sarah’s pajamas did not all belong to Sarah or Natalie.

Laboratory results identified the unknown portion as genetically matching Sarah.

A full sibling.

Possibly her twin.

Emily had been injured inside the Carter home that night.

Yet the kitchen footage never showed her.

Marcus examined the missing twenty-three minutes again.

“If Emily entered through the basement tunnel, she could have been in the hidden room.”

James felt cold.

Sarah said Natalie remained downstairs.

She had not mentioned another child because she might believe Emily was still there too.

A police team returned to the underground room.

Behind the medical cabinet, they found another door.

It opened into a narrow crawlspace.

A child’s bloody handprint marked the wall.

At the end, officers recovered one white sneaker and a broken pendant engraved with the letter E.

Emily had escaped the room.

But she had not escaped the tunnel.

A maintenance camera beneath Carolyn’s garage captured Frank carrying an unconscious child toward a van.

The girl wore Sarah’s blue pajamas.

Frank had dressed the twins alike.

He may have intended investigators to confuse them.

👉 Norma admitted stealing Natalie’s second baby, while the blood and tunnel footage proved Sarah’s twin had been inside the house and was removed under the same clothing before police arrived.
