Chapter 16 - Denise’s explanation

Denise requested a private mediation.

Not reconciliation.

Financial dispute.

She arrived with counsel.

No coffee.

Good.

She said:

“I never thought you were worthless.”

I replied:

“You called me a useless parasite.”

“I was furious.”

“Yes.”

“You’d spent months playing games.”

There.

“What games?”

“Pretending you had no money.”

“I never said that.”

“You knew what we believed.”

“Yes.”

Her lawyer looked at me.

That admission mattered.

I continued:

“I should have corrected it.”

Denise stared.

“You tested us.”

“Yes.”

“You wanted us to fail.”

“No.”

“Bullshit.”

Martin did not interrupt.

This was mine.

I said:

“I wanted to know whether your behavior changed when you stopped expecting an inheritance.”

“And now you’re acting shocked that we’re angry?”

“Anger is not coffee.”

She looked down.

Good.

“Anger is not taking my documents.”

Silence.

“Anger is not unauthorized spending.”

Her jaw tightened.

“We took care of you for years.”

“Yes.”

“We gave up work.”

“Lauren did more than you.”

“That’s not the point.”

“What is?”

“You benefited from us.”

“Yes.”

There.

I did.

Care has value.

Driving.

Appointments.

Administrative labor.

Emotional labor.

Their mistake was deciding unilaterally what that value entitled them to take.

I said:

“If you believed I owed you compensation, you should have asked.”

“You would’ve said no.”

“Maybe.”

“That’s why—”

She stopped.

May you like

Exactly.

A likely no is not permission to create a yes.
