Chapter 24 - Lauren takes longer
Lauren remained focused on fairness.
“You’re giving strangers what Dad built for us.”
“No.”
“Who is it for, then?”
“Whoever the trust documents say.”
“Dad wanted his daughters secure.”
“You are secure.”
“That’s not the same as what we were promised.”
“What were you promised?”
Silence.
Again.
Family assumptions hate direct questions.
Lauren eventually admitted Henry had never told her:
You will receive half.
He said:
“You girls will always be taken care of.”
True.
A protected multi-million-dollar trust was being taken care of by almost any rational definition.
She meant:
Control.
It took therapy for her to say that.
One year later, she wrote:
I thought being your caregiver gave me seniority over your decisions.
Then:
When you withdrew access, I experienced it like you were firing me from being your daughter.
That was painful.
Also insightful.
I responded:
I should have separated care from finances much earlier.
No excuse.
We both contributed to blurred roles.
