Chapter 20 - Maya testifies

Maya testified once.

Briefly.

She wore a plain navy dress.

No waitress apron.

She described:

Eleanor seated.

Argument.

Lauren taking card.

Denise pouring coffee.

Eleanor recoiling.

Daughters leaving.

Maya helping.

Receipt.

Phone number.

No speculation.

Denise’s lawyer asked:

“Mrs. Price later gave you money, correct?”

Maya answered:

“Twenty-three dollars.”

The lawyer paused.

“Anything else?”

“No.”

“Has she offered?”

“She offered to buy me lunch once.”

“Did you accept?”

“Yes.”

“How expensive?”

Maya looked confused.

“Twelve dollars?”

People laughed.

Judge stopped them.

That was the end of the wealthy-widow-bought-the-witness theory.

After the case concluded, Maya and I remained in contact.

Not constantly.

Coffee.

Lunch.

She worked fifty hours most weeks.

She was completing prerequisites for nursing school at community college.

I did not pay her tuition.

Not then.

May you like

She did not ask.

Good.
