Chapter 22 - I changed the estate plan

Three months after all primary criminal resolutions, I amended the trust.

Not in a rage.

Not in secret.

Independent counsel reviewed.

Capacity documentation current.

No Maya in the room.

No Martin drafting alone.

I wanted the changes to survive me.

Before:

After my death, remaining assets were divided equally between continuing trusts for Denise and Lauren, with provisions for grandchildren.

After:

Each daughter would receive a significantly smaller but still substantial protected trust.

Not zero.

Approximately ten percent of the eventual residue allocated to each daughter’s lifetime trust, subject to independent management.

Education and health trusts for grandchildren received twenty percent combined.

The remaining sixty percent?

Charitable purposes.

Not one giant foundation bearing my name.

I hated that.

A portfolio of long-term commitments:

Elder legal services.

Food insecurity.

Community health.

Vocational education.

Caregiver respite.

Domestic financial-abuse prevention.

Why leave Denise and Lauren anything?

Because I still loved them.

Because Henry loved them.

Because consequences did not require pretending they had never been my daughters.

Why reduce their shares?

Because I no longer believed enormous discretionary wealth would improve their lives or our grandchildren’s.

Could they challenge after my death?

Anyone can file papers.

We documented everything carefully.

I recorded a private video with independent counsel explaining my reasoning.

Not:

They were bad daughters.

Specific governance.

Specific history.

May you like

Specific intention.

No theatrical curse from the grave.
