Chapter 23 - Denise changes first
I expected Lauren to change first because she cried more.
I was wrong.
Denise did.
Not instantly.
Not beautifully.
She went six months without contacting me outside lawyers.
Then sent:
I understand why the card was canceled.
I almost laughed.
Progress apparently begins with expense policy.
Later:
I understand why you removed me from financial authority.
Then:
I am sorry I poured coffee on you. I did it because I wanted to humiliate you for refusing to let us manage you.
There.
Specific.
Then:
Calling you a parasite was especially grotesque because I had spent years benefiting from you.
I read that twice.
No request for forgiveness.
Good.
We met eleven months later.
Coffee shop.
She ordered tea.
Deliberately, I suspect.
She asked:
“Do you hate me?”
“No.”
“Do you trust me?”
“No.”
She nodded.
That was the correct response.
