Chapter 10

No arrest was completed in the memorial hall.

No courtroom proceeding began.

No insurance payout was revealed.

No final legal outcome unfolded beneath the chandeliers.

The confrontation ended with the hall sealed and Dominic Mercer staring at the padlock he thought would never leave the mountain.

Elena stood beside the flag-draped coffin prepared for her, one gloved hand near the folded edge of the American flag, dried blood at her lip, snow melting from her tactical vest onto the marble floor.

Her framed military portrait watched from beside the white flowers.

The coffin remained closed.

Empty.

Dominic sat collapsed several feet away, his black funeral suit wrinkled, his face pale with the terror of a man whose dead wife had walked into his lie.

Chloe stood apart from him now, one hand at her throat, her panic no longer hidden behind concern.

Colonel Harris remained with the honor guard.

Special Agent Grant stood near the rear doors with two military investigators.

“Nobody leaves this hall.”

The words settled over the officers, mourners, family members, cameras, flowers, and flags.

Elena lifted the padlock one last time and placed it carefully on top of the insurance papers beside her portrait.

Steel against paper.

Proof against performance.

Dominic stared at it.

Then at Elena.

He had expected a funeral.

He had expected sympathy.

He had expected money, silence, and a mountain storm to finish what he started.

Instead, the woman he abandoned stood in the ceremonial hall he rented to bury her.

Elena did not attack him.

She did not scream.

She only looked at him with the discipline of someone who had survived worse than his plan.

And Dominic finally understood the truth.

May you like

He had not left Elena Mercer to die.

He had left evidence with a survival instructor.
