Chapter 9

Colonel Harris approached Elena slowly.
Not as a superior officer demanding explanation.
As a soldier recognizing another soldier still standing after impossible conditions.
“Mercer,” he said quietly.
“Yes, sir.”
“You need medical care.”
“Yes, sir.”
“You also need to sit down.”
“No, sir.”
A faint sadness crossed his face.
Then respect.
Elena looked toward Dominic.
“He filed reports?”
Harris did not answer fully.
“Statements were made.”
“Insurance?”
Grant looked at the papers beneath the padlock.
“Documents were present.”
No payout.
No final outcome.
No complete explanation.
Only enough for Elena to know what Dominic had been trying to hurry into existence while her body was still expected to freeze.
Chloe whispered, “I didn’t know.”
Elena turned toward her.
The red gown shimmered beneath the chandeliers.
Chloe looked expensive, terrified, and uncertain which version of herself might survive the next five minutes.
Elena did not accuse her.
Not yet.
She simply said, “Then start remembering what you did know.”
Chloe’s face crumpled.
Dominic lunged halfway up from the floor.
“Don’t talk to her.”
The honor guard shifted again.
Dominic stopped.
The room watched him like they were seeing a stranger climb out of a familiar suit.
Elena’s family sat frozen in the front row, horror replacing grief.
They had paid respects to an empty coffin.
They had listened to a husband mourn a woman he expected never to contradict him.
