Chapter 5

Elena walked for nearly six miles before a highway maintenance crew found her.

By then, she had stopped feeling her toes correctly.

Her lips were cracked.

Her uniform was stiff with snow, dirt, and dried blood.

The padlock hung from a strip of torn fabric tied to her vest.

The foreman tried to take it from her.

She tightened her grip.

“No.”

“Ma’am, you need medical help.”

“I need a phone.”

“You need an ambulance.”

“I need both.”

At the emergency station, she gave her name.

The dispatcher froze.

“Elena Mercer?”

“Yes.”

A pause.

“They’re holding your memorial today.”

Elena closed her eyes.

Not because she was surprised.

Because Dominic had moved faster than she expected.

A dead wife creates sympathy.

A missing body creates tragedy.

A fast funeral creates momentum before questions can form.

She asked for Colonel Harris.

Then Special Agent Grant.

Then she said one sentence that changed the room.

“My husband locked me in the mountain cabin and left me to freeze.”

The maintenance crew stopped talking.

The dispatcher reached for another line.

Elena looked at the clock.

If Dominic believed she was dead, he would be at the funeral.

With witnesses.

With cameras.

With whatever papers he thought grief would help him process.

Special Agent Grant asked if she wanted to go to the hospital first.

Elena looked down at the padlock.

Then at the time.

“No,” she said. “Take me to my funeral.”

Grant studied her for one moment.

Then nodded.

Not because it was dramatic.
