Chapter 6

The memorial hall in Helena had been designed for honor.
White marble.
Tall windows.
American flags.
Gold-trimmed chandeliers.
A place where families spoke softly and soldiers stood straight.
Dominic had turned it into a stage.
Elena saw that the moment the rear doors opened.
Her framed portrait stood beside the coffin.
Insurance papers rested discreetly on a side table near the guest book, hidden badly beneath a black leather folder.
Chloe stood too close to Dominic.
Not like a friend.
Like a woman waiting for the next life to begin.
Elena’s muddy boots touched the marble.
Several mourners turned first with annoyance, expecting a late guest.
Then shock.
Then disbelief.
A woman dropped her program.
One officer whispered her name.
Dominic did not turn until the silence became too large.
When he saw Elena, his knees failed before his mind did.
He collapsed backward.
Chloe knelt beside him automatically, but her eyes stayed on Elena.
Elena walked forward with the padlock in one hand and placed her left glove on the flag covering the empty coffin.
The flag was warm from the room.
Her glove was cold from the mountain.
For a second, Elena almost broke.
Not from pain.
From rage.
They had folded honor over a lie.
They had placed her portrait beside a coffin she was never inside.
They had let Dominic speak her death into existence because his suit was clean and her body was absent.
Then she looked at Colonel Harris.
He stood fully upright now.
Recognition in his eyes.
Respect.
And alarm.
Elena breathed once.
Then gave the room the only opening line she trusted herself to say.
