Chapter 2

The funeral had cost more than most people’s weddings.

White orchids.

Crystal chandeliers.

A military honor guard.

A framed portrait of Elena in uniform.

A flag-draped coffin no one had opened.

Dominic told everyone the body was unrecoverable because the mountain cabin burned after the storm.

He cried when people watched.

He accepted condolences with both hands.

He stood beside Chloe Bennett like she was merely a grieving family friend, though every whisper in the hall knew she had been closer than that.

Elena’s family sat in the front row, stunned by grief and ceremony.

They believed Dominic had done everything possible.

He had arranged the memorial.

Filed the reports.

Spoken to insurance representatives.

Told the military liaison that Elena had insisted on going alone to inspect the remote training cabin.

He made himself look like a broken husband.

But Dominic made one mistake.

He forgot what Elena did for a living.

Elena Mercer was not just a soldier.

She was an Army survival instructor.

She taught people how to stay alive when weather, terrain, fear, and bad decisions tried to kill them.

She taught them how to ration heat.

How to read wind.

How to escape restraints.

How to recognize when a locked door was not the end of the world, only the beginning of a problem.

Dominic had not left a frightened wife in a snowbound cabin.

He had left a trained soldier.

When Elena appeared at the rear of the memorial hall, the first person to recognize her was Colonel Harris.

He did not move at first.

His face changed before his body did.

Then he whispered, “Mercer.”

That one word moved through the honor guard like electricity.

By the time Dominic turned, Elena was already walking toward the coffin prepared for her.
