Chapter 7

Dominic’s confession came from fear, not conscience.

That mattered.

He did not say Elena’s name with love.

He did not ask if she was hurt.

He did not rise and run to her.

He scrambled away from her across the marble, knocking over the program stand, eyes fixed on the padlock as if it were a weapon.

“You were supposed to die in that cabin!”

The sentence echoed against the high ceiling.

One mourner gasped.

Another phone rose.

A uniformed officer turned toward Special Agent Grant near the rear doors.

Chloe’s hand froze above Dominic’s chest.

For one second, her face revealed everything.

Not grief.

Not confusion.

Calculation collapsing into terror.

“Dominic… what did you do?”

He looked at her as if she had betrayed him by asking.

Elena noticed.

So did Grant.

So did Colonel Harris.

Dominic tried to pull himself together.

“I mean—she was missing. Everyone said—”

“No,” Elena said.

Her voice cut through the room.

Quiet.

Controlled.

More dangerous than shouting.

“You said cabin.”

Dominic went pale.

He had.

Not accident.

Not storm.

Not search.

Cabin.

The place he had never officially admitted knowing she reached.

Elena raised the padlock to shoulder height.

Ice still clung to the metal.

Scratches marked the shackle where she had fought it.

“You left the wrong soldier to freeze.”

The honor guard subtly shifted.

Not grabbing Dominic.

Not surrounding him dramatically.

Just closing the shape of the room.

Dominic saw the exits become smaller.
