Chapter 8

Special Agent Grant had been waiting near the rear doors for ten minutes before Elena entered.

That was part of the plan.

Not a full plan.

There had been no time.

But enough.

He had officers positioned near the exits.

Colonel Harris had been warned that Elena might arrive alive.

The funeral cameras had not been shut off.

The hall’s guest list had been preserved.

The military liaison had collected Dominic’s earlier statements.

Grant had learned long ago that conspiracies often crack when liars are forced to adjust too quickly.

Dominic had spent days controlling the story of a dead woman.

He was not ready to improvise in front of the living one.

Grant stepped forward after the confession, holding a sealed evidence bag and a small recorder.

No labels visible.

No documents shown.

No arrest made.

Just presence.

“Nobody leaves this hall.”

Dominic’s head snapped toward him.

“You can’t hold people here.”

Grant’s expression remained calm.

“I said nobody leaves.”

Chloe rose unsteadily, taking one step away from Dominic.

That step hurt him.

Elena saw it.

He had expected loyalty.

Or silence.

But Chloe had heard the same confession everyone else heard.

And self-preservation was stronger than love built on insurance money.

Elena walked back toward the coffin.

Each step left wet marks on the marble.

She placed the padlock carefully on top of the insurance papers beside her framed portrait.

The sound of steel against paper was small.

But every person in the hall heard it.
