Chapter 21 - Caroline apologizes
Caroline’s apology came before Morwenna’s.
We met after dropping Odelia at school.
Caroline had flown in for a long weekend.
Coffee.
Awkward.
She said:
“I wanted the videos to prove something.”
I waited.
“That she missed me because she should live with me.”
Good.
“I didn’t ask why every video came from your mother.”
Good.
“I thought Morwenna was seeing what you couldn’t because you were too close.”
There.
“And?”
“I was wrong.”
“About me?”
“About the videos.”
Specific.
Then:
“I also let your mother say things about your parenting because they made my petition feel more moral.”
That hurt.
“What things?”
“That you choose work.”
“That you make Odelia dependent.”
“That a daughter needs a mother.”
Caroline looked ashamed.
“I knew some of it was unfair.”
“But useful.”
“Yes.”
I appreciated the answer more than tears.
Then she said:
“I’m sorry.”
I nodded.
“I also used Mom’s behavior to want you punished through custody.”
She looked at me.
“I know.”
“I was wrong.”
There.
Parents apologizing in both directions.
Not reconciliation.
